Background
While Alexei Papin didn’t have a background in amateur boxing, he did have a professional kickboxing career where he went on to accumulate a total of ten wins, one loss and one draw. In 2015, he entered the sport of professional boxing after ending his kickboxing career, debuting roughly three months after his last kickboxing match.
Accomplishments
Fighting as a Cruiserweight, Papin was unbeaten by the time he won his first title – the IBF International Cruiserweight – in 2018, and once again in 2019 when it had been left vacant. In August in that same year, a fight was scheduled with Ilunga Makabu for his WBC Silver Cruiserweight title. It was a close fight where Papin just barely lost to the Makabu by a majority decision.
Papin would go on to easily stop his next two opponents in 2020 and 2021, and in 2022 he surprised many by knocking Montenegrin prospect Dilan Prašović out cold by just the second round of their fight.
Boxing Style
While he didn’t have an amateur boxing background, Alexei Papin’s background as a kickboxer helped him to quickly have a firm grasp over the boxing fundamentals, most evident in his bout with Ilunga Makabu which he only narrowly lost and had a good showing of his technical skills. He is quick with his hands and his feet but his stamina can wear down enough in later rounds, making him slightly susceptible in drawn-out fights.
