Background

Craig Richards competed in regional and national competitions where he performed fairly well, though often finding himself on the losing end of fights at the latter stages of various competitions. He notably won the Haringey Box Cup at some point during his amateur career.

Richards entered the professional ranks of boxing in 2015.

Accomplishments

Though Richards debuted as a Light-Heavyweight, he competed as both a Middleweight and Super Middleweight in his early days as a professional. Like most medium-to-high rated prospects, Richards went undefeated early on.

His winning run was broken in his eleventh match in 2017 when he lost by UD to fellow brit Frank Buglioni while challenging for the British title at 175 lbs. The loss failed to really impact Richards who simply went on to resume his winning form. Despite a minor interlapse through a draw in 2019, the slew of better competition he would face would help him climb up the rankings.

Eventually, he was chosen as an opponent to face WBA world champion Dmitry Bivol for his world title in 2021. Despite losing by unanimous decision against Bivol, Richards held his own and looked no less in form when he beat stopped his next opponent in the same year he lost to Bivol.

In 2022, Richards was matched with British prospect Joshua Buatsi. In what was a challenging fight for them both, Buatsi eventually came out the winner by UD but Richards looked no worse than he had facing Bivol and the fight was noted to have been more competitive than anticipated.

Boxing Style

craig richards boxing style

Craig Richards likes to stay on the outside where he can pepper his opponents with jabs and crosses. While not known for great spurts of combinations or coming forward, he is an efficient boxer with good footwork and head & body movement. He seems to be offensively lacking in some areas, but often compensates that by being defensively sound.
