Background
Trained by his late father, former Welterweight Ali Salaam, Tony Harrison grew into a competitive amateur boxer that managed to win two state (Michigan) titles and reached the semi-finals of the Golden Gloves on at least one occasion.
After accumulating an amateur record of 75-12, Harrison made his official pro debut in 2011.
Accomplishments
Since making his pro debut in the Super Welterweight division, Harrison has transitioned from underdog, to champion, to contender status. He managed to remain undefeated while recording a fairly high number of finishes.
Though he never seemed to receive an opportunity to win a mid-tier or low-tier title, Harrison remained active and lethal as he continued to sharpen his skills for an eventual world title opportunity.
He encountered a few hick-ups before picking up his first world title, losing against Willie Nelson and Jarrett Hurd before eventually facing Jermell Charlo for his WBC title in 2018 in an upset unanimous decision win.
Since losing in the rematch with Charlo in 2019, Harrison fought to a split-decision draw with the relatively unknown Bryant Perella in 2021, but seemed to pick up form after beating Spanish contender, Sergio Garcia, by UD in 2022.
Harrison received the chance to become a world title contender again if he managed to beat Tim Tszyu who – like him – was intent on claiming the vacant WBO interim world title to face Jermell Charlo in the near future. The match turned out to be a showcase fight for Tszyu who dominated throughout and eventually stopped Harrison in the 9th round.
Boxing Style
Tony Harrison is an orthodox fighter that has adapted himself into a counterpunching syle of boxing, reminiscent of the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pernell Whitaker.
Aside from his tendency to box from the outside, Harrison’s 72% KO ratio clearly demonstrates how lethal he is when his power is not excluded.
Harrison has also displayed to have some of the best jabs in the entirety of boxing, which is compounded even more with his speed which also seems a cut above the rest.
His technical skills can be best spotted through his footwork, his positioning and his defensive fundamentals which has seen his head & body movement reach elite levels.
He is also known as high–IQ fighter. Harrison’s vulnerabilities pertain to stamina issues and perhaps him having a rather weak chin which has resulted in him being stopped in every defeat he suffered.
