Background
One of the US’ most notable female prospects in boxing, Claressa Shields exceeded expectations by being successful in a number of prestigious competitions, which includes the Olympics – where she won gold twice – the Pan-American Games and the World Championships.
She has brought home at least five gold medals in various competitions, and her career has been noted to be extradorinary for a boxing amateur due to the 64 amateur fights that she managed to win, and the single loss she had on her record (against Savannah Marshall).
Accomplishments
Claressa Shields debuted in 2016 as a Super Middleweight, beating future Undisputed champion Franchón Crews-Dezurn by unanimous decision. Over the years, her resume would subsequently be filled with several notable fighters such as Hanna Gabriels, Femke Hermans and Hannah Rankin, all of whom she would beat – mostly by unanimous decision – while winning a large amount of world titles.
She has fought in three divisions (Super Middleweight, Middleweight and Junior Middleweight) and has been successful in all of the weight classes, thus becoming a three-weight world champion.
Shields became Unified for the first time by stopping former world Unified Middleweight champion Nikki Addler, earning herself the WBC and IBF Middleweight titles in the process.
In 2019 Claressa Shields beat Christina Hammer to become Undisputed for the first time in her career, while she was a Middleweight. She became Undisputed a second time a second time when she defeated Marie-Eve Declaire in 2021, this time as a Junior Middleweight.
After beating another strong challenger in Ema Kozin the same year, Claressa Shields faced Savannah Marshall in 2022 on October 15.
For the third time in her career Shields became undisputed when she beat Savannah Marshall by unanimous decision, making history as a woman and as a boxer in achieving such a feat.
Boxing Style
Well-versed in most of the important aspects in boxing, Claressa Shields has shown herself to be a dangerous and unpredictable fighter. Despite her low KO-record, she is one of the best female boxers of her era due to her ability to employ different styles, effective tactics and her overall determination.
Shields not only set herself apart from her peers through the many accolades that she won throughout the amateur and professional ranks, but she has also delved into the sport of MMA to improve herself in useful fighting aspects such as clinching.
While power isn’t her strength, her footwork, accurate combinations, ability to fight on the back and front foot, tenacity in the ring, hand speed and conditioning have clearly contributed to her still-unbeaten and successful career.
