Background

Tony Yoka had a challenging but worthwhile senior amateur career (as a Super Heavyweight) where he faced both the ups and downs of boxing; which helped mold him into a better fighter as evident by his accomplishments as an amateur. He combined several important tournament wins with latter final appearances, and won several gold, silver and bronze medals during his amateur career.

His highlight as an amateur is winning the 2016 Rio Olympics where he beat several of the best Heavyweight prospects of his generation such as Filip Hrgović and Joe Joyce en-route to his Olympic gold-winning triumph. He turned professional soon after in 2017.

Accomplishments

Yoka has remained undefeated so far, beating experienced Heavyweights such as compatriot Johann Duhaupas, former highly-touted prospect David Allen and Christian Hammer in only 9 fights after debuting. In 2021 – four years after becoming a professional – Tony Yoka won his first title, the European Union heavyweight title, versus Belgian Joel Tambwe Djeko who he managed to stop in the twelfth round of their fight.

In his 12th fight he faced fellow prospect Martin Bakole on May 14th in June 2022. He struggled throughout most of the match with Bakole’s pressure – though he did have some good moments – and the two knockdowns he suffered culiminated in him eventually losing by majority decision. His loss with Bakole was an upset, as Yoka was considered the favorite in their bout.

His career now seems on the brink of collapse after he netted his second loss in  a row in March of 2023 against veteran Carlos Takam, losing by split-decision in a contest that he also was expected to win.

Boxing Style

Although he has yet to face true caliber opposition, Yoka has already netted a high KO-rate of 81% in a showcase of his power, and has further shown his hardiness as a Heavyweight fighting opponents like David Allen and Christian Hammer. His amateur career has helped highlight his technical skills while the pro ranks helped him to establish many of the same skills against more experienced opponents, allowing Yoka to display his jab and tight guard, amongst other skills, in the division and his age makes it possible for him to improve more.
