Former WBA Welterweight world champion, Yordenis Ugas, has been quite active on his social media, specifically twitter, and joined a long list of fighters who act quite contrary to how they appear or act in public. Ugas, one of eleven opponents who has managed to beat Terence Crawford in the amateurs, seemingly shows an uncanny amount of hostility towards Terence Crawford, but has publicly never really mentioned Crawford in a negative light.

This is without disrespect and excuse the question. Who is Rocha? What record do you have?” Yordenis Ugas recently stated on Twitter.

Appropriately, the message was regarded with some confusion considering Alexis Rocha (22-1, 14 KO’s) has been in the top 15 of the Welterweight division’s ranking boards since Rocha stopped Blair Cobb (16-1-1, 10 KO’s) in an upset victory in 2022. Even if he wasn’t knowledgeable of someone who could easily be matched with him as an opponent, Yordenis Ugas (27-5, 12 KO’s) is perfectly equipped to look up all the needed information himself.

His question was a rather obvious attempt at discrediting Terence Crawford’s (39-0, 30 KO’s) future potential opponent, given he had already criticized Crawford before in a now-deleted Tweet that he claimed was mistranslated.

Yordenis Ugas’ message in January when Errol Spence was announced to be fighting Keith Thurman at 154 lbs.

Though every person has the right to say what they please, it is important to note that Yordenis Ugas, who is Cuban, does not speak English, yet on his Twitter account he shows a fluency over the English language that he has never displayed openly. It is logical to conclude that his Twitter account is run by someone else – who is fluent in English – rather than himself, but there’s also the distinct possibility that he simply has access to the best translating products/software.

Yordenis Ugas’ explaining how a previous Twitter post had been mistranslated.

Based on the above and previous posts, Ugas it is unlikely that he is using the best of translation software. The best conclusion we can draw is that someone else controls his account, which naturally means that any message put out on his social media accounts in English should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Whatever the case, there seems to be a clear disconnect from who Ugas is as a person, and who he is on his social media. Yordenis Ugas’ last meeting with Terence Crawford was clearly amiable, which breeds even more speculation as to whether he is truly putting out his own posts on Twitter given most of his posts seem to contradict how he regards Crawford publicly.

Ugas’ last match was in April where he suffered a stoppage loss – and an orbital bone injury – to unified Welterweight champion, Errol Spence Jr. (28-0, 22 KO’s). Though he has yet to indicate a return to the ring, the former WBA world champion – or whoever controls his Twitter account – seems intent on fueling the flames with other Welterweights which would impact future chances of facing these same fighters.
