Despite having retired from professional boxing, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has continued to operate in the sport of boxing in exhibition bouts. Following his last match that was held in London against British TV reality star Aaron Chalmers, Mayweather will now be fighting on US soil again after his last fight in the US occurred in 2021 ― which was against social media influencer Logan Paul.

Floyd Mayweather’s future opponent is typically much-less experienced and like Mayweather’s last opponent Aaron Chalmers, his next opponent has had a couple fights in pro boxing and more in MMA. Different from the other opponents is that this one carries a particularly infamous name which is sure to draw in crowds; Gotti.

John Gotti III (2-0, 1 KO’s) ― son of former active New York mob boss John Angelo Gotti, and grandson of the even more infamous John Joseph Gotti ― will be facing Floyd Mayweather in the ring on June 11. Despite the scrutiny and apathy that comes paired with his last name, John Gotti has carved out a decent MMA career of himself where he compiled a record of 5-1 before crossing over to professional boxing in which he has had 2 victories so far.

The 30-year old American former MMA fighter will be rationally against the vastly more experienced Floyd Mayweather who has yet to lose in any contest, exhibition or professional. Facing the 46-year old former multi-division champion does not seem to daunt Gotti, however, who has spared no time in tipping himself against the legendary boxer.

I shall take the fight to him. I’m going to show him different looks, something that these past YouTubers ― or whatever you want to call them ― didn’t do, cause they suck, and we’re gonna go from there.” Gotti stated at the press conference that officially launched the event between the two fighters.

I don’t make no promises. Floyd is going to have to earn his money, June 11th, and he’s going to have to work mentally and physically.” Gotti said confidently.

I love his confidence.” Floyd Mayweather said in response to Gotti’s comments. “Whenever you compete at the highest level, at any level, you have to believe in yourself. And what’s great about him is he believes in his skills, in his talent.

Mayweather’s choice of opponent is apparently not just an effort to draw in the required blockbuster crowds to continue his moneymaking spree. The retired professional boxer also revealed his connection to the Gotti (former) crime family at the press-conference.

I’m friends with his dad. This is what people don’t know, I’ve always been friends with the Gotti family. That’s what a lot of people don’t know.” Floyd Mayweather said.

And I’m glad we’re finally able to get this done. We’ve been working on this for a couple years now. For a long time.

“And of course, a great last name for this battle, last name means everything. You’re last names matters.” Floyd said.

Appropriately, the June 11th fight event that will be headlined by Floyd Mayweather and Joe Gotti at the FLA Arena in Sunrise, Florida, has been styled with the slogan of “Last Names Matter”.
