According to Errol Spence Jr. himself, his July 29th fight with Terence Crawford should have never happened due to an alleged cataracts injury that he suffered from. The former unified welterweight champion recently filmed himself getting out of the hospital with a patch over his eye and claimed he had finally completed a cataracts surgery that was “past due”.
Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KO’s) further expressed the belief that he got overwhelmed by Terence Crawford’s (40-0, 31 KO’s) offensive during their undisputed match due to this eye injury that was apparently left unaddressed until more than six months after Spence’s bout with Crawford.
“Had to get cataract surgery,” Spence revealed in an Instagram post that was later tagged by other outlets.
“It’s been past due. S*** was covering my eyes. Why you think I got hit with so many jabs and hooks? Still a great performance by bro [Terence Crawford].“
Cataracts is a condition to the eye that leads to a decrease in vision through various symptoms including blurry vision, faded colors and sensitivity to bright lights. It can also potentially lead to blindness.
It is unknown if this surgery has anything to do with the torn retina that Errol Spence Jr. suffered in 2021 which forced him to pull out of a fight with Manny Pacquiao. What is peculiar is the extremely odd timing of this surgery which was performed six months after he fought Crawford on July 29th last year.
If true, then Spence and his team have made a very dangerous gamble with Spence’s life giving he was heading into a title match while actually needing surgery. It is therefore confusing why there was a complete lack of effort by Spence, his promoter PBC and any other involved party to address this issue before his fight with Crawford. The thought of so many stakeholders willingly allowing Spence to compete amidst an injury only reflects how corrupt boxing is, as in no shape or form should he have fought.
It is also unknown why no medical professionals did not seem alerted by this injury, and as there are always health examinations preceding a fight, there are plenty of people who now need to answer for this alleged mishap. Had Spence truly been dealing with an eye injury, an eye test should have technically been able to detect this, yet no one seems to have discovered this cataracts injury.
Prior to this news, an unknown individual claiming he was a doctor claimed Errol Spence Jr. was dealing with brain damage prior to fighting Crawford, none of which could be verified. Now with another plausible reason for losing on July 29th, there are now legitimate concerns surrounding what appears to be steadfast propaganda or serious health issues.
In the case of the latter, there are no words to describe the incompetence on display by the multiple parties that should have seen either of the two claims of Spence being neurologically damaged and/or injured. If these reports were not false, there must surely be a thorough legal investigation into the PBC and other organizations involved with the Spence-Crawford match as they risked a fighter’s life for their own monetary gain.
Not would this be considered grossly immoral, this would also be considered criminal in certain states in the USA as there were multiple parties that should have been able to detect Spence Jr.’s cataracts as pre-match medical examinations are standard and obligatory, while other involved teams should have stopped the match if this was the case.
If all we have heard surrounding Spence is false, that provides no relief as there then appears to be a sheer propaganda machine that is aiming to discredit Terence Crawford’s victory at every point, which is an extreme form of bias and prejudice which should also be legally accounted for.
The cataracts surgery might complicate the potential rematch between Errol Spence Jr. and Terence Crawford which was slated to occur this year. There has yet to be any substantial updates on this rematch to begin with, which further compounds to even more confusion as it is extremely rare for no word to arrive on a rematch that had been signed and sealed last year.
