Golden Boy Promotion’s November 2 show, headlined by American lightweight contender Floyd Schofield, saw an undisputed bout between American IBF women’s flyweight champion Gabriela Fundora and Argentinian WBA, WBC & WBO unified champion Gabriela Alaniz occur in the co-main event. The Golden Boy card was held at the Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Gabriela Alaniz vs. Gabriela Fundora

Gabriela Celeste Alaniz (15-2, 6 KO’s) came into the match with three flyweight (112 lbs) titles [WBA, WBC & WBO] which were put on the line against Gabriela Fundora (15-0, 7 KO’s) and her own IBF title―making it the first women’s undisputed match of the women’s 112 lbs division ever.

Slated for 10 rounds originally, the first round seemed to go in Alaniz’ favor who seemed undaunted by Fundora’s greater height and reach as she chose to attack on the inside. Fundora struggled with the pressure and intensity, but Alaniz seemed to tire herself out by the latter half of the round, allowing Fundora to largely win the last portion as she pounced on Alaniz’ fatigue―which seemed to have been caused mostly by the body shots Fundora unleashed.

The 2nd round saw a visibly more shaken Alaniz struggle to repeat the performance of the first round as Fundora’s reach and boxing prevented the Argentinian champion from asserting herself.

The fight drifted back in Alaniz’ favor in the 3rd round as she seemed to gain a second wind that allowed her to be effective once more on the inside. However, this turned around again in the 4th to favor Gabriela Fundora whose jabs and accurate combinations resulted in a dominant round for the American.

The following round again seemed to fall on Fundora’s lap as Alaniz heavily struggled to summon a fraction of the effectiveness she had displayed prior, allowing Fundora to continue to sharply outbox and outwork Gabriela Alaniz the next couple of rounds, until the 7th.

In the 7th round, Alaniz was sharply losing her focus and endurance as Fundora kept on pressuring her with a jab and combinations, dropping her in the last [2nd] minute of the round. While Alaniz beat the count of 10 that ensued and got up to fight again, she was knocked down for the 2nd time just minutes after as a left hand made Alaniz struggle to get up.

Though she seemingly beat the count of 10, Alaniz looked worse for wear, forcing the referee to call the match off―allowing Fundora to claim a technical knockout (TKO) victory on course to a win that would see her claim Alaniz’ WBA, WBC and WBO titles to add alongside her own IBF title―thereby becoming the first women’s undisputed flyweight champion in its entire history.

Main Event Result

The headlining bout of the fight between American Golden Boy lightweight (135 lbs) star Floyd Schofield (18-0, 12 KO’s) and Mexican contender Rene Tellez Giron (20-4, 13 KO’s) saw Schofield retain his unbeaten record as he coursed to the 10 rounds to win by unanimous decision (UD). The only blemish that occurred during the fight for Schofield was a knockdown that he suffered in the 11th round―though he would recover from it and see out the 12th and last round.
