The free agency period of Adrien Broner has officially ended following his latest move to join up with long-established boxing promoter, Don King. The Welterweight boxer had previously signed a multi-million, multi-fight deal with BLK Prime, but left the company under mutual agreement after the streaming provider failed to produce a single opponent for him to fight against.
Don King now serves as Adrien Broner’s promoter per their announcement through Don King Productions, King’s boxing promotion. With a career of more than fifty years in the sport, Don King has seen his name and career fade into near obscurity in recent years as his reputation faded due to several disputes with household boxing names such as Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis and Evander Holyfield. He is known to be involved in promoting three fighters currently, which includes Trevor Bryan, recent dethroned WBC Cruiserweight, Ilunga Makabu, and American 140-pounder and Terence Crawford stablemate, Ryan Martin.
With Adrien Broner now joining Don King, he has now become the third American fighter that the longtime promoter will have on his roster. With both Makabu and Bryan having lost in their last fight – with the former having lost as recently as February, King’s fighters are not exactly the cream of the crop at the moment, and Adrien Broner would inarguably be the biggest name to join the promoter’s side in recent years.
“The Problem’s” signing with arguably one of the most experienced promoters in the industry also signifies a new period for both. Broner, a four-division world champion, now aspires to reach untold heights as he declared what his next step would be following his signing.
“I have a fantastic camp with Kevin Cunningham, and I can hardly wait to get back into the ring again.” Broner said. “Winning a world title and constantly defending or unifying the titles is what I am aiming to do.”
The ever-bubbly Don King seemed no less enthused as he raved about Broner’s achievements in the sport and what he could still accomplish.
“This phenomenal team-up of superstar “exciting” bad boy of boxing Adrien Broner and the world’s greatest boxing promoter, will give the people what they want – the best of boxing, and the best boxing excitement… capturing the imagination, the heart, and the mind, stimulating the boxing imagination’s begging the all-important question, when is the next event?” King excitedly said.
The 91-year old promoter also seemed open to fresh new partnerships with other promoters, including Frank Warren who he was recently in conflict with due to holding onto millions of dollars of one of his clients, British WBA ‘Regular’ Heavyweight world champion Daniel Dubois. The case was eventually settled inside of court with Dubois receiving the owed money in full.
“As his proud promoter drops the gauntlet to all the other promoters and challenges them to bring forth their best fighters to (meet) fight super star bad boy of boxing Adrien Broner. Bob Arum, Frank Warren, Al Haymon, Eddie Hearn, and any other promoter with a hot commodity champion, we welcome them all.” King said elatedly.
