Amanda Serrano and Danila Ramos made history in the world of boxing by becoming the first female boxers to engage in a twelve-round, three-minute fight. This historic achievement took place during an event at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Orlando, Florida, on October 27th. The bout, as expected, concluded with Serrano emerging victorious, making her the first woman to win in a 12×3-minute match.

Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KO’s), the undisputed women’s featherweight champion, demonstrated her exceptional skills against Brazilian contender Danila Ramos (12-3-1, 1 KO’s). Ramos had earned the opportunity to fight for all of Serrano’s world titles after defeating Argentinian featherweight contender Brenda Karen Carabajal (18-6-1, 9 KO’s) in August of this year.

While Ramos certainly deserved the chance to fight Serrano, it was evident that there was a significant gap in boxing ability and experience between the two fighters. Serrano, a multi-division world champion and the current undisputed champion at 126 lbs, displayed no vulnerabilities during her fight with Ramos.

The twelve-round battle overwhelmingly favored Amanda Serrano, as all judges scored it 120-108 in favor of the Puerto Rican champion. There were no surprises on the night, as Serrano completely dominated the underdog Ramos, who failed to pose a challenge in any of the rounds.

CompuBox’s punch stats mirrored the fight’s one-sided nature, with no significant moments from Danila Ramos to suggest a change in the outcome:

Serrano’s victory marked her second successful defense of her featherweight world titles since becoming undisputed earlier this year in February. However, it also underscored the lack of talent in the division.

Amanda Serrano currently reigns supreme in the featherweight division, but her victory over the unlikely challenger Danila Ramos has exposed the division’s shortage of talent. Many top fighters in the featherweight division are either too inexperienced to face Serrano or have already been defeated by her. While Serrano cannot be blamed for the division’s current state, there are other weight classes where she might face more formidable opponents, allowing the featherweight division to grow naturally.

At 38 years of age and with fewer than twenty fights on her record, Ramos was disappointingly the best opponent Serrano could likely face at this time, further highlighting the need for rejuvenation within the featherweight division.

Given that every potential champion will likely face Serrano, who is simply too seasoned for most, there is no real opportunity for potential future world champions to develop. Skye Nicolson (8-0, 0 KO’s), Raven Chapman (7-0, 2 KO’s) and Nina Meinke (18-3, 4 KO’s) are among the few female featherweights who genuinely appear to have the talent to become world champions, underscoring the need for new blood in the division.

While Amanda Serrano’s historic achievement in winning a twelve-round, three-minute bout should be celebrated, questions have arisen about the state of the women’s featherweight division based on her opponent.

Women’s boxing, as a whole, would greatly benefit if Serrano moved up in weight and challenged herself against other renowned fighters while the featherweight division sifted through the best of the up-and-coming talents within it. Serrano has previously moved up to challenge lightweight undisputed champion Katie Taylor (22-1, 6 KO’s) in 2022, demonstrating her adaptability to higher weight classes.

Based on the recent event, there is nothing stopping Serrano from moving up, and there are numerous intriguing matchups she can explore at super featherweight, lightweight, or beyond, provided she’s capable.

While the event featured several other fights, there were no particularly noteworthy performances or standout fighters among the competitors.
