WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo has finally addressed the jaw-dropping slap that occurred during the pre-fight press conference for the main event between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. On his Instagram Live, the 33-year-old American called out Caleb Plant in an interview that not only uncovered the events leading to the slap but also featured Plant calling out Jermall Charlo.
In an interview with the ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game’ podcast, Caleb Plant seemed to have a particular opponent in mind when asked who he wanted to fight next.
“I’m looking to fight [Jermall] Charlo next. That’s the fight that I want,” Plant told his interviewers.
“I know he’s been out for a minute. If he wants a tune-up, that’s perfectly fine with me.“
Plant was also asked to elaborate on what occurred that led to him slapping Jermall Charlo in public.
“Basically, we were at the Bud-Spence press conference behind the stage, and my wife JP and I were just catching up with everybody,” Plant explained.
“I saw Jermall, and he was standing off to the side, staring at me with a blank stare. I thought, ‘What does this dude want?‘
“He walked up and said, ‘Man, why don’t you f*** with me? I f*** with you, I look up to you’.“
Plant went on to describe how their interaction turned sour after he expressed his confusion about Charlo’s behavior towards him.
“I said, ‘We’re cool, but sometimes you’re hot, and sometimes you’re cold. Like, you literally came up to me one time and told me you love me, and the next time I see you in an interview, you’re saying stuff like, ‘I’ll beat the sh** out of Caleb and bring him back to Tennessee’.“
The confrontation eventually escalated, with the two going back and forth and culminating with Jermall Charlo pulling Caleb Plant’s beard, drawing some attention and apparently causing Charlo to act out of character.
“He pulled the hair on my chin, kinda hard too, and I pushed him off me. People started to hear us and got in between us,” Plant continued.
“I told him, ‘Don’t ever f****** do that again. What’s your problem? Why would you do that?’
“And then he starts calling me a b**** a** white boy, saying, ‘Look at him, y’all, acting just like a b**** a** white boy. Look at him, getting scared just like a b**** a** white boy.’ And then he pulled my chin hair again, but harder.
“Standing in a room full of my boxing peers, it’s like, you know, you really put my back against the wall when you do something like that. So, I had to handle my business and do what I did.“
The widely-viewed video depicts Caleb Plant slapping Jermall Charlo, which now has a tangible story behind it, according to his interview.
Aside from explaining how Jermall Charlo racially taunted him and physically accosted him, Caleb Plant also revealed that he had slapped Charlo twice, with the second slap apparently only being captured on camera.
“Honestly, that was the second time I smacked him. The first time I smacked him was right before someone started recording,” Caleb Plant said.
“I guess they saw me smack him once and pulled out their phone to start recording. That’s when I caught him a second time.“
In response to Plant’s interview, it took Jermall Charlo more than a week to respond in a recent Instagram video while he was apparently with his family.
“When I get a chance to fight Caleb Plant, I’m going to knock the f*** out of Caleb Plant, alright? Excuse my French,” Charlo remarked in the video, with his children allegedly nearby.
“And Gillie Da Kid, I will whoop the f*** out of Gillie Da Kid, okay? John Doe is here, you heard?” Jermall one of the interviewers of the ‘Million Dollaz Worth of Game’ podcast.
While it is unclear whether Jermall Charlo’s sudden bravado in front of his children should be commended given the profanity he used, it seems almost certain that a match-up between him and Caleb Plant would become a natural draw for fans given the current tension that exists between the two.
Jermall Charlo has not yet apologized for his behavior towards Caleb Plant, which is sure to heat up a potential fight between the two, given the fiery exchange they were embroiled in.
For now, while Plant is apparently content to wait for Charlo and take an interim fight, Jermall Charlo himself is rumored to make his long-awaited comeback after two years against Jose Benavidez Jr. in either November or December of this year.
