NEW YORK, NEW YORK - AUGUST 15: Canelo Alvarez of Mexico (L) and Jermell Charlo (R) face off during a press conference to preview their September 30 super middleweight undisputed championship fight at Palladium Times Square on August 15, 2023 in New York City. (Photo by Sarah Stier/Getty Images)

While Jermell Charlo has not recently made negative remarks about Alvarez, Alvarez clearly recalled the American undisputed super welterweight champion’s past comments surrounding his ability in the ring and expressed this during their press conference held on September 27th.

I have this motivation,Canelo Alvarez (59-2-2, 39 KO’s) said during the press conference.

He [Jermell Charlo] never believed in my skills. He always called me out, and I’m ready to show him on a couple days.

The super middleweight title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo (35-1-1, 19 KO’s) is set to occur on September 30th. Most significantly, Charlo will be moving up two weight classes from 154 lbs to challenge Alvarez for all his world titles and The Ring’s lineal belt.

Before their fight was announced, Jermell Charlo had quite a lot to say about Canelo Alvarez and his skills. Approximately four months ago, Charlo engaged in a fiery rant regarding Alvarez while supposedly recovering from a broken hand injury. Though he was expected to face Tim Tszyu (23-0, 17 KO’s) at that time, Charlo instead expressed interest in a fight with Canelo Alvarez.

Say, say, man. Why don’t they make Canelo fight undisputed? Tag Eddie Hearn, ‘Undisputed vs. Undisputed’. F*** it,Charlo said during an allegedly drunken condition.

Someone up in there pissing me off a little bit, talking about Canelo. Let me show y’all how it is. Why y’all don’t make Canelo vs. Charlo?

When that hand get right, I’ll knock him [Canelo Alvarez] out and come back to knock that other moth******** [Tim Tszyu] out.

Someone put that sh** together. Little Charlo will fight anybody. I ain’t never duck no smoke.

Charlo’s alleged drunken state has now faded in the wake of what will be the biggest fight of his career on September 30th against multi-weight champion Canelo Alvarez. However, when asked about his previous comments regarding Alvarez’s skills, Charlo seemed to double down on his earlier statements.

That’s just what it is,” Jermell Charlo stated during the September 27th press conference.

I come to win this fight, so no matter what he says, so no matter what he’s saying I came to win this fight.

Believe in your skills or not. There’s a lot of people that don’t believe in you [Canelo Alvarez], but we shall see on Saturday.

The two fighters will undoubtedly be eager to prove each other wrong at their upcoming bout on September 30th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Notably, while Jermell Charlo will enter the ring as the undisputed super welterweight champion, his WBO title will be relinquished and vacated upon his ring announcement. Regardless of whether he wins or loses, he will leave the ring as a unified champion at 154 lbs.
