Chantelle Cameron has quickly found a new home following her departure from Matchroom, with Queensberry Promotions confirming they signed the former undisputed 140 lbs champion during a press conference the promotion held today on Friday, May 3rd. The presser, which was held to announce Queensberry’s latest signings, also announced the signing of Aadam Hamed from the United Arab Emirates, who is also the son of British boxing legend Naseem Hamed.
Though her change in promotional outfits seems to have occurred instantaneously, Chantelle Cameron (18-1, 8 KO’s) revealed during an interview that there had been negotiations with Frank Warren’s Queensberry Promotions for approximately six weeks.
“Talks have been going on for about six weeks or so,” Cameron told Boxing King Media. “It’s been kept quiet because I kind of wanted it to be quiet. I’m not one of them people that go on social media saying, ‘Fight news dropping soon’, because it wasn’t and it was still just talk so I kept my mouth shut, kept quiet and let my team work their magic and get the deal over the table.“
With her move towards Queensberry Promotions, Cameron has joined a direct rival of Matchroom within the United Kingdom, and is now planning on reclaiming her position as the top fighter in the super lightweight division. Complicating matters, however, is the reign of undisputed champion Katie Taylor (23-1, 6 KO’s) who is set to fight Amanda Serrano (46-2-1, 30 KO’s) on July 20th. According to Cameron, Taylor does not appear to be interested in fighting her in a trilogy bout.
“Everyone wanted the trilogy, Eddie Hearn wanted the trilogy, DAZN wanted the trilogy, but you need a dance partner to have that trilogy with,” Taylor continued. “And as much as she said after our fight in November that the trilogy would be next―and how great it is for women’s boxing to have the first trilogy, she ended up having a change of tune and wanted an easier fight at the time.
“But then obviously she comes out to have the Amanda Serrano fight. I can’t blame her, because she’s on a big stage on Netflix on the Jake Paul and Mike Tyson undercard, and she’s going to get paid a ton of money―but before that, that fight wasn’t even in talks, so she already ducked me before that fight was made.“
Taylor also spoke on the exact reasons for her departure from Matchroom, highlighting several points that were addressed in a previous article regarding the favoritism surrounding Katie Taylor by Matchroom―which likely [heavily] contributed to Cameron leaving the promotional outfit for Queensberry Promotions.
“There’s no bad feelings, [but] obviously Eddie [Hearn] has his favorites, and I wasn’t one of them,” Cameron stated bluntly. “I think there’s no bad terms; what happened, happened. I’m just looking forward to moving on now with Queensberry Promotions.
“I do think Frank [Warren] is going to get behind me, and TNT is going to get behind me, and they’re going to promote me―and have my best interests and support me, but no bad feelings. It’s business.“
In addition to Chantelle Cameron, Adaam Hamed (1-0, 1 KO’s) will be joining the Queensberry stable. Though completely unestablished within the sport, the signing was likely prompted by the fact Hamed’s father is Naseem Hamed, more commonly known as “Prince Haseem”, who carved out a prevalent career as a bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight before retiring in 2002 at the age of 28.
