Background

Chris Billam-Smith had a significant career as a Cruiserweight (Heavyweight in the amateurs), getting several Silver and Bronze medals but never winning Gold. He turned into a pro after failing to make the Great Britain boxing team for amateurs that competed in major international competitions such as the Olympics.

Accomplishments

Chris Billam-Smith debuted as a Cruiserweight in 2017 with a stoppage victory. After eight fights where he stopped all of his opponents by stoppage or plain knockouts, Billam-Smith challenged for the WBA Inter-Continental Cruiserweight title in 2019 against Richard Riakporhe. He fell short in the match but wasn’t far from a victory, losing by a very close split-decision from the judges in a bout that could’ve gone either way.

That same year in November, Billam-Smith won the Commonwealth title, and two years later in 2021 he added the WBA Continental title to his collection.

In July of 2021 he won a domestic match against fellow British prospect Tommy McCarthy, edging out over the Irishman with a split-decision.

He showed further good account of himself by beating British prospect Isaac Chamberlain by unanimous decision in 2022. Later that year, he coursed through Armend Xhoxhaj with a knockout victory.

On March 27th, Chris Billam-Smith became the WBO Cruiserweight champion after successfully triumphing over former gym-mate and fellow Brit Lawrence Okolie (then the WBO world champion) who subsequently also recorded his first career loss as a professional boxer.
