Quasi-active former UFC multi-division champion Conor McGregor and super middleweight undisputed champion Canelo Alvarez appear to have engaged in a social media dispute. The two fighters exchanged heated words on social media without holding back their animosity toward each other.
The altercation began when Conor McGregor (0-1, 0 KO’s) praised Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s performance against Canelo Alvarez (60-2-2, 39 KO’s) on September 14th, 2013, in a Tweet. McGregor also used this opportunity to boast about his own performance against Mayweather, comparing it to Alvarez’s fight.
Conor McGregor stated on Twitter, accompanied by a video clip of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s highlights against Canelo Alvarez:
“One of the greatest performances in professional boxing this was. I landed more shots on Floyd than Canelo. I’d love another go.“
In response to McGregor’s post, Canelo Alvarez responded with a few jabs, referring to McGregor’s own fight against Mayweather, which took place approximately four years later in August 2017.
“I just need one hand with you, and I don’t need to throw so many punches.” Alvarez retorted to the semi-retired UFC star.
“Saul, you uncooked chicken, I’ll stomp the ligaments out of your knee joint. I don’t even need hands to end you,” McGregor furiously responded.
“I’ll kick you raw pink, leave you looking like you were left out in the sun too long. Haha, freckle arse. I will see you, and we will see. Canelo is a cornflake, no sugar.“
It’s important to note that McGregor was stopped by Mayweather in the seventh round of their fight, while Alvarez completed the entire pre-determined twelve rounds of his title match with Mayweather.
“You act like a little kid. You have a big mouth and you know how to talk shit well, but when the fight comes, you always quit.” Alvarez replied to McGregor’s impassioned rant.
The social media spat between the two fighters might hint at a potential fight in the future, sparking interest in a rivalry that could attract a substantial audience. However, due to Conor McGregor’s exclusive contract with the UFC and his recent drug testing―suggesting he’s preparing for his next MMA fight, the possibility of a fight against Canelo Alvarez remains uncertain.
Even if a feasible opportunity for such a match arises, issues surrounding the sanctioning of the fight may arise, given the vast difference in professional boxing experience between the two fighters. While McGregor fought Mayweather in 2017, the sanctioning of that fight was likely influenced by its profitability and Mayweather’s retired status.
As an active boxing champion, having recently defeated unified super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo (35-2-1, 19 KO’s), Canelo Alvarez possesses numerous advantages that would make it challenging for an inexperienced fighter like Conor McGregor to secure a match, or stand any chance of beating the Mexican super middleweight undisputed world and lineal champion.
