Background

Daniel Dubois had a successful amateur career, winning several youth and amateur championships or titles, and being within reach of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics when he trained with the Great Britain Olympic team, but opting out of his Olympic plans in order to pursue a professional career.

Dubois’ senior amateur career (starting at the age of the eighteen) was not uneventful with Dubois managing to string together more than a dozen wins with a high number of KO’s, losing only several times with a few of them being close split decisions.

Accomplishments

Debuting as a pro in 2017 in the Heavyweight division, it didn’t take long for Dubois to win accolades; winning the WBC Youth Heavyweight tile in the same year as his debut, and following up with a string of KO performances where he won the Southern Area, British and WBO Global & European Heavyweight titles.

Against fellow British prospect Nathan Gorman, Dubois proved his talent and potential, knocking out his opponent in the fifth round and gaining another British title for his win.

He continued his unbeaten form, eventually facing Joe Joyce in a domestic match-up to unofficially determine the next British contender for the World Heavyweight titles.

Being regarded as the likely winner prior to the fight [1], Joyce showcased his power and speed during his bout with Joyce, Dubois couldn’t match up to Joyce’s pinpoint jabs and durable chin and he eventually fell to defeat when the fight was stopped in the tenth round due to his swollen eye.

Dubois showed his resilience in his next fight, knocking out Bogdan Dinu early in the second round to earn himself the interim WBA World Heavyweight title, and following up his title victory with a first-round knockout against tune-up opponent Joe Cusumano.

Dubois showed good form in 2022 with two stoppage/knockout victories over American WBA ‘regular’ champion Trevor Bryan and South African contender Kevin Lerena―though the latter match did result in him being knocked down thrice. Nonetheless, Dubois successfully defended his WBA ‘regular’ heavyweight title―which he won from Bryan earlier that year―against Lerena.

In August of 2023, Daniel Dubois faced unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in a losing effort that saw him arguably quitting in the 9th round of the title bout. The fight was eventually ruled as a knockout win for Usyk and resulted in the Ukrainian defending his unified heavyweight titles for the second time of his career.

Dubois returned not long after on December 23rd as part of Saudi Arabia’s ‘Day of Reckoning’ boxing event. Facing American heavyweight Jarrell Miller, Dubois showed he had recuperated from his KO loss to Usyk by stopping Miller in the last round of their 10-round match.

Boxing Style

Throughout even his amateur career, Dubois had always showed his power, often being compared to Mike Tyson due to his physique, style and strength [2]. His high knockout rate during both his amateur and professional career has helped establish him as one of the most powerful Heavyweights in the division, despite his young age.

In the professional ranks, Dubois was shown to have a durable chin – most prominently with British rival Joe Joyce – and during his match with Heavyweight Richard Lartey where he ‘brawled’ with the Ghanaian to eventually achieve a fourth-round knockout.
