Background

David Benavidez had an unillustrious amateur career that saw him fight and win just 15 times. He made his professional debut at the age of seventeen in 2013.

Accomplishments

Despite having had a surprisingly low amount of fights in the amateurs and entering the sport at quite an early age, David Benavidez debuted at Super Middleweight and immediately proved to be a significant talent when he knocked out his very first opponent.

That knockout would become a staple in the American fighter’s career as he continued to retain a high KO ratio while dispatching any opponent that was put in front of him.

After eighteen fights as a pro, Benavidez received his first opportunity for a world title – the WBC Super Middleweight title – which he grabbed with both hands as he defeated the more experienced Ronald Gavril by split-decision in 2017.

Though he eventually went on to lose this same title in 2018 for failing a drug test for the use of cocaine, Benavidez recaptured the title against Anthony Dirrell in 2019 not long after. He again lost the title in 2020 before his fight with Roamer Angulo due to coming in over the weight limit, but found himself become an interim world champion not long after in 2022 after beating David Lemieux into retirement.

He then successfully defended his WBC interim title against Caleb Plant on March 23rd in 2023 in a dominating UD win.

Later that year, Benavidez faced the unbeaten and prolific Demetrius Andrade on November 25th. David Benavidez won the match by technical knockout in the 6th round, handing Andrade his first-ever career lost and culminating in another successful title defense for Benavidez.

Boxing Style

david benavidez boxing style

With his height and reach, David Benavidez is one of the biggest fighters at Super Middleweight which is best illustrated through his heavy jab – which he often further uses to set up his right hand.

He is an accomplished pressure fighter, and is even more lethal due to his effectiveness at unleashing combinations. He has not shown a high aptitude for defense as he’s unable to apply head or body movement, but seems to compensate this with toughness and resilience.

His power is undoubtedly one of his main strongpoints, and his KO ratio of 88% reflects this well.
