Background
David Light was a good amateur, succeeding in winning several competitions or winning silver by reaching the final of those respective competitions. He was most prevalent in the national amateur boxing scene, specifically the New Zealand National Championship which he won thrice. He also won silver at the Commonwealth Games as a Heavyweight (the amateur equivalent of a Cruiserweight).
Light turned professional in 2017.
Accomplishments
David Light has debuted and fought as a Cruiserweight for the totality of his boxing career. Throughout his professional career he won a total of five titles – mostly mid-tier – which eventually set him amongst the top 25 of the various governing bodies’ rankings.
With his (undefeated) resume mostly built on fighters that were weathered by losses or less inexperienced, his first real test came in December of 2022 when he faced and beat unbeaten American boxer Brandon Glanton for the WBO Global & International titles.
On March 25 in 2023, he received his first opportunity for a world title against Lawrence Okolie, but lost by unanimous decision to the British world champion.
Boxing Style
Not known for backing down, David Light tends to dig his way inside the pocket, but can also box his opponent if convenient. Because of that, his jabs tend to be highly-efficient and advanced, and seems to be very much his most dangerous weapon. He has also shown himself to have decent power, which is especially evident through his above-average KO ratio of 60%.
