Background
David Morrell impressed as both a junior and senior amateur, managing to win the Youth World Championships in 2016, the Cuban National Championships in 2017, and the Indian Open Championships. He had over a hundred fights in the amateurs, and turned pro in 2019.
Accomplishments
David Morrell started as a Super Middleweight and he has so far managed to impress, scoring four knockouts in five fights. In just his third fight, in 2020, Morrell won the interim WBA world title; an astounding achievement for a professional that had just two fights in his pocket prior to fighting for the interim world title. Morrell was promoted to regular champion in January of 2021.
In his first defense of his (regular belt, Morrell followed managed to knock out opponent Mario Abel Cazares – who was undefeated prior to the bout – to retain his title. He retained his title three more times, beating the likes of Alantez Fox and Aidos Yerbossynully, the latter of which occupied top 10/15 rankings across most of the known governing bodies. Interestingly he has maintained a sublime knockout streak of 87%, even when stepping up in competition.
Boxing Style
David Morrell fights as a southpaw; he’s quick with his feet, body, head and hands and he fights with an aggressive style where he often employs feints and unsuspecting angles throw his opponent off.
Morrell is a big puncher as evident by his his four knockouts in five fights, and he’s therefore very adept at being effective on the inside. So far, Morrell has shown to have good reflexes and defensive fundamentals.
