Background
With an amateur background in Judo, Delfine Persoon didn’t have a viable amateur boxing career before 2019 when she applied to become an amateur boxer in order to compete at the Tokyo Olympics [1].
Persoon turned professional in 2009.
Accomplishments
Delfine Persoon’s career has been one of ups-and-downs, but contains mostly positive outcomes for her given the accomplishments she’s achieved. She is a two-time world champion, and has held status as an interim world champion once. She faced several champions and contenders, most of whom she beat, and some of who she would end up losing against. She has fought in two divisions; the Lightweight and the Super Featherweight/Junior Lightweight division.
Her most noticeable fight is likely her first match – held in 2019 – with Katie Taylor which was considered controversial when she lost by majority decision with a fair amount of critics – including Persoon herself -having judged Persoon to have won. Her second match (held in 2020) with Taylor proved to be more convincing for the latter as Taylor beat Persoon handily by unanimous decision.
Delfine Persoon continued to grind out wins after her second defeat to Taylor, albeit as a Super Featherweight rather than the Lightweight division where she has spent most of her career.
Persoon has scored vital wins against top female boxers including Érica Farías, Christina Linardatou, Maïva Hamadouche and Melissa St. Vil.
Boxing Style
Fighting out of the Orthodox stance, Persoon has employed a fairly reckless but nonetheless effective style where she often tries to hurt her opponent from within the pocket. She is well-capable of fighting on the outside due to her (often higher) height and reach advantage, but has found herself to be more efficient when fighting on the inside. She is one of the most toughest female boxers in the sport, having fought multiple matches where she triumphed despite suffering clear and visible damage.
