Background

Prior to his amateur boxing career, Dillian Whyte had a professional kickboxing career where he achieved a 20-1 record before turning to MMA in December 2008. During his short MMA career, Whyte had just one fight where he won by KO.

Dillian Whyte followed up his kickboxing and MMA career by entering boxing at the age of 20 in 2009 . Early on in his amateur career, he managed to beat future unified Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua by unanimous decision. His boxing amateur career was cut short by the ABA ( Amateur Boxing Association) after his participation in professional kickboxing and MMA was discovered.

After his dispute with the ABA and a short amateur career where he went 6-0 with 5 KO’s, Whyte enetered the professional ranks of boxing.

Accomplishments

Making his debut on 13 May 2011 where he won by points in 4 rounds. Dillian Whyte worked himself up to the ladder the next 4 years – while remaining undefeated -and finally got an opoortunity to win a title on September 12, 2015. He beat his opponent Brian Minto by KO in 3 rounds, winning the WBC Silver International Heavyweight title in the process.

Whyte received an opportunity for another couple titles against Anthony Joshua, who he had faced in the amateurs and had grown into a top Heavyweight prospect since entering the pro’s and winning gold in the Olympics in the amateurs.

Anthony Joshua beat Whyte by KO in the 7th round of their 12-round fight, revenging his amateur loss and winning the vacant British Heavyweight title and Whyte’s WBC International title in the process.

Whyte recovered from his setback by going undefeated for the next couple of years, working himself to become regarded as one of the top Heavyweights in the process and winning several non-world titles in the process. He suffered his second loss against veteran Heavyweight Alexander Povetkin where he got TKO’d in the 5 th round on August 22, 2020. The next year he avenged his loss by TKO’ing Povetkin on March 27, 2021 in their rematch.

On April 23 in 2022, Whyte faced Tyson Fury for his WBC World Heavyweight and The Ring titles. Fury dominated in that match to eventually come out victorious by stopping Whyte in the 6th round.

In November, Dillian Whyte went up against American Heavyweight prospect Jermaine Franklin at the Wembley Arena on November 26th. He managed to narrowly win against the American through a majority decision.

Boxing Style

dillian whyte boxing style

A heavy hitter, Dillian Whyte is known as a fighter that often likes to brawl, but is capable of boxing when needed or when convenient. His most dangerous weapon is his blindingly-fast left hook that has dropped and knocked out many Heavyweights throughout his career. Whyte is also known as a heavy jabber, but isn’t always exactly accurate with his jabs.

He’s also shown to be able to fight as a southpaw during his world title fight against Tyson Fury – and can thus switch stances – though in the short period he has fought as a southpaw, it hasn’t really proved to be effective thus far.
