Edgar Berlanga Still Not Fighting Top-Level Competition As Matchroom Arranges Headlining Bout For February 24

Edgar Berlanga will be participating in his second match for Matchroom since signing with the promotion earlier this year. However, the American super middleweight contender is still not set to face anyone noteworthy, despite expectations that his move to the UK-based promotion would lead to matchups against stronger opponents. The bout between Berlanga and Irish contender Padraig McCrory is scheduled to headline a card on February 24 at the Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.

Edgar Berlanga (21-0, 16 KO’s) signed a multi-fight deal with Matchroom in February, suggesting the possibility of high-profile fights to prepare him for a potential title bout against undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (60-1-1, 39 KO’s).

However, Berlanga has so far faced fringe super middleweight contenders signed with Matchroom. Irishman Jason Quigley (20-3, 14 KO’s) was Berlanga’s first opponent under the Matchroom banner, and now another Irishman Padraig McCrory (18-0, 9 KO’s) is set to test Berlanga in February.

While both Quigley and McCrory are considered decent contenders at 168 lbs, Berlanga has yet to challenge himself against the top contenders of the division, such as David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KO’s) and David Morrell (10-0, 9 KO’s), who could potentially elevate him to title challenger status upon defeating them. However, the superior skill and talent of Morrell and Benavidez suggest a gap that may highlight Berlanga’s own limitations or the acknowledgment of such limitations by him or his promotion.

Both Berlanga and McCrory will be risking their undefeated records in this matchup, potentially bringing the winner closer to contention for a title. Overall, their fight provides an opportunity to establish both fighters as worthy title challengers, and a dominant victory for the winner could pave the way for a title opportunity.

Matchroom will announce additional matches for the card at a later date.
