Rumors are now fully abound with the third postponement of the fight between WBA ‘regular’ Lithuanian welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis and American welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. Both fighters (who are also undefeated) have had their set of problems that had caused the fight to be delayed, and July 8th was set to definitively pit two of some of welterweight’s youngest and brightest talents in the ring.

However, the fight has now again been postponed as Golden Boy fighter Vergil Ortiz Jr. (19-0, 19 KO’s) pulled out of his match following Golden Boy’s announcement:

Though Golden Boy Promotions and Vergil Ortiz Jr. provided no actual reason as to why Ortiz pulled out of fighting Eimantas Stanionis (14-0, 9 KO’s), boxing reporter Dan Rafael shed light on what seems to be a worrying situation for Ortiz:

Earlier this year in March, Ortiz Jr. also withdrew from a scheduled bout with Eimantas Stanionis in May which was thereafter rescheduled to July 8th. He was then suspected to suffer from a case of rhabdomyolysis which he has since recovered from. However, ESPN has claimed that he withdrew from that May bout due to alleged issues in making weight on time.

The fact that official reports from Golden Boy have not clarified the reasons for Vergil Ortiz Jr.’s withdrawal is notable, and only intensifies speculation of what he is suffering from now.

Floyd Schofield (14-0, 11 KO’s), a Golden Boy prospect who fights in the lightweight division, will be headlining the July 8th fight card against fellow American Haskel Rhodes (28-4-1, 13 KO’s).
