Though Errol Spence Jr. has to officially announce so himself, the former unified welterweight champion has activated the rematch clause in his contract to face Terence Crawford once more. The two had previously battled on the 29th of July which ended in a one-sided victory for Crawford. Spence has now decided to meet the challenge against Crawford again and will apparently be fighting Crawford at a weight class of Crawford’s choosing due to his victory.

Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KO’s) and Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) have/had a rivalry that stems back to when Crawford first became the WBO welterweight champion in 2018 following a TKO victory over then-incumbent WBO champion Jeff Horn. While the two American fighters had gone back-and-forth over the past five years through social media and other outlets, it took them roughly five years to finally step into the ring on July 29th of this year

The stipulations set in their contracts had set a deadline of 30 days to activate the rematch clause following their first bout, and ESPN further reports that the winner of the first match would be able to decide which weight both boxers would fight at; with the two choices set between fighting at either welterweight or super welterweight.

Though Errol Spence Jr. has yet to alert the public of his decision, the news was first confirmed by Brian “BoMac” McIntyre, coach of undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford.

He [Terence Crawford] just texted me yesterday and said that Spence activated his rematch [clause],” BoMac told Pro Boxing Fans on August 13h.

That’s confirmed, but we don’t have a date and stuff like that.

Though it hasn’t been officially been confirmed at which weight the two will fight, it is heavily speculated that the match will take place at 154 lbs given the interest of both fighters to fight there. In fact, Spence had declared as such before his first fight with Crawford, and Terence Crawford reiterated this notion following his match against Errol Spence at the post-fight press conference.

It [the rematch] definitely don’t have to be at 147 [lbs],” Crawford stated to a reporter.

Like I said, I’m in the hurt business. 147 was kind of hard for me too. I was already talking about moving up in weight and challenging [Jermell] Charlo so 154 wouldn’t be out reach of anything.

If the news is true, both Errol Spence and Terence Crawford might meet each other in the ring this year, likely at the back-end in November or December.

Regardless of which weight class the fight takes place, questions will arise on whether Errol Spence Jr. has the means to beat Terence Crawford following the gruesome loss he suffered, but in any case the former unified champion seems to be up for the challenge and might be ready to silence all the doubters this time around.
