American former welterweight unified champion Errol Spence Jr has generated some apprehension as he revealed his intentions to fight the winner of Tszyu-Fundora, despite multiple factors making the fight less feasible to occur. With the winner set to become both the WBC and WBO super welterweight champion, Spence would be an unlikely challenger with Terence Crawford already expected to become the WBO mandatory challenger at 154 lbs ,

Then there is the matter of whether Errol Spence Jr (28-1, 2 KO’s) should even be in the position to face the winner of Tim Tszyu (24-0, 17 KO’s) and Sebastian Fundora (20-1-1, 13 KO’s) after he Tweeted out his interest to fight whoever will come out on top next.

Headed to Vegas, I want the winner!!Errol Spence Jr stated on Twitter/X yesterday, referring to the Tszyu-Fundora fight set to occur this Saturday.

There are multiple reasons for why Spence should not―and can not―fight the winner of Tszyu-Fundora as not only is he coming off a devastating loss to Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s), he is not currently ranked in any of the sanctioning bodies’ 154 lbs rankings to qualify for an instant title match. Though any sanctioning body can decide to include him in their rankings if they invent an appropriate reason for doing so, likely by basing his rating off his former tenure as a world champion, he is currently not ranked to be afforded an instant title opportunity.

Unlike Terence Crawford who can move up and down weight classes to face champions using his “WBO super champion” status, Errol Spence does not have any such distinction or title. Furthermore, Crawford has been acknowledged as the WBO mandatory challenger at super welterweight/junior middleweight, thereby forcing the future holder of the WBO belt to face Crawford or risk being stripped. Spence, in comparison, has no such distinction or status to be considered a mandatory challenger by any of the other sanctioning bodies, reducing the chances of him getting a potential fight with the future WBO 154 lbs champion.

Then there is the recent surgery that Errol Spence Jr underwent this year for cataracts which might complicate matters further depending on how quickly and well Spence will heal/has healed, as it is unlikely the winner of Tszyu-Fundora will wait around for Spence to be fully healed.

Other factors, such as the deterioration in interest to see Spence compete at 154 lbs for the first time of his career following a one-sided loss, can also contribute to the fight not occurring on a timely basis, yet Tim Tszyu’s manager, Glen Jennings, appears to have no qualms in facing Spence if he comes out on top against Sebastian Fundora―despite Tszyu being obligated to fight Crawford if he wins against Fundora and risking being stripped if he does face Errol Spence Jr instead of Crawford.

If it came to be, and Spence was available next, absolutely we would do that, as we would [even] if our hand was forced via a mandatory for Crawford Glen Jennings told Thaboxingvoice.

If the Spence card gets dealt, absolutely you’ll see Tszyu-Spence. If the Crawford fight gets dealt, absolutely you’ll see Tszyu versus Crawford. They’re the two big fights that we want, and they’re the two big fights we will pursue.

Given the likely chance Crawford will be announced as the WBO mandatory challenger following the Tszyu-Fundora fight, Errol Spence Jr will be unlikely to be considered as an opponent if Tszyu makes it past Fundora due to his obligations to face Crawford as the WBO champion. However, Jennings teased the idea of Tim Tszyu actually vacating the WBO belt after Thaboxingvoice presented that as an option for Tszyu to take.

It’s certainly a fair comment, and it’s certainly an outcome that could happen but I’ll park that one for now,” Glen Jennings said, hinting at the possibility of Tim Tszyu vacating the WBO title in order to face Errol Spence Jr rather than Terence Crawford.

Interestingly, Tim Tszyu himself rejected the notion he would vacate his WBO title to potentially face Errol Spence Jr during a recent interview.

I’m going to have to talk to my manager,Tszyu stated to reporters after being made aware of Glen Jennings’ interview with Thaboxingvoice.I ain’t vacated nothing yet.
