Background

Filip Hrgović’s first competition win was in 2010 where he won the 2010 Baku Youth World Boxing Championships as a Super-Heavyweight (Heavyweight equivalent in amateur boxing).

The subsequent years he continued to show his talent as a prospect, reaching several final rounds of different tournaments where he won several bronze medals.

He reached another final in 2015 in the European Amateur Boxing Championships, earning himself a gold medal after beating his opponent by UD.

After qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics, Hrgović made it all the way to the semi-final where he lost only by split decision to eventual Olympics winner Tony Yoka.

Accomplishments

In the span of three years, Filip Hrgović  quickly built a fearsome reputation when he soundly beat veterans such as Kevin Johnson, Éric Molina and Rydell Booker.

His first real test came against Zhang Zhilei on the 20th of August in 2022 where he managed to squeeze out a hardwon battle against Zhilei by winning through unanimous decision. He also won the IBF interim heavyweight title as a result of his win.

On August 12th, Hrgovic netted another important win over Australian contender Demsey McKean, knocking out the heavyweight in the 12th round of their fight to retain his IBF interim title.

Filip Hrgovic continued to fight again in 2023 on December 23rd where he recorded a 1st-round stoppage win over Australian opponent Mark De Mori.

Boxing Style

filip hrgovic boxing style

Filip Hrgović is known to frequently box with his opponents rather than engaging in full-on head-to-head clashes. He’s shown himself to have a well-rounded arsenal of skills, with his pinpoint jab and strong right hand excelling as his main strengths.

In his bout with Zhang Zhilei he seemed to struggle on occasion when fighting on the inside, but he also proved successful at fending off and even hurting his opponent in the pocket, when putting in the effort. He also suffered a knockdown in their match, suggesting he might be vulnerable when pressed, but he also demonstrated to have great stamina in the same bout by fighting through fatigue, and being able to launch a flurry of punches late on in the match.
