Almost 10 years after officially retiring from professional boxing, Floyd Mayweather Jr continues to grab headlines for all the wrong reasons. This time around, the news media circuit is buzzing with a set of extraordinary circumstances that Mayweather might be facing with, including the alleged kidnapping/forced stay debacle that the “50-0” retired fighter is purportedly going through.
The most noteworthy piece of news surrounding Floyd Mayweather Jr is one of his own doing; an Instagram post he put out to claim Gervonta Davis’ upcoming fight with Frank Martin was cancelled.
“This is sad, hopefully this is just a rumor.” Mayweather posted alongside a picture of the word “cancelled” being incorrectly spelled across a poster image of the upcoming Davis-Martin fight.
With Gervonta Davis (29-0, 27 KO’s) having attended an official press conference to announce his upcoming June 15th fight against Frank Martin (18-0, 12 KO’s) roughly over a week ago, the Mayweather’s post came across as cryptic and could be construed as an attempt to sabotage Davis’ fight; something Mayweather was also suspected of doing with Devin Haney (31-1, 15 KO’s).
In response to Mayweather’s Instagram post, Davis quickly went on to call Mayweather “a hater”; an opinion that he has held for a number of years and resulted in Davis leaving Mayweather Promotions―the Floyd-owned promotional outfit that had promoted Gervonta Davis since the start of his professional career.
Though there have been back-and-forths between the two in the near past, the most recent issue between the two concerned the alleged detainment of Floyd Mayweather Jr in Dubai, which Davis also alleged took place.
In early May, boxing insider Rick Glaser reported that Mayweather had reportedly paid the Dubai authorities the required amount that an acquaintance of him had purportedly stolen [in goods or value], and was therefore let free.
Over the past two weeks, rumors started surfacing of Floyd Mayweather Jr fighting former opponent Victor Ortiz in an exhibition and rematch of their 2011 fight in Mexico, only for Fight Hype to report that he would be fighting John Gotti III in a rematch of their 2023 exhibition bout instead.
Yesterday, however, WBN reported that the exhibition―that was planned between Mayweather and Ortiz, rather than Mayweather and Gotti―had been cancelled after Mayweather did not show up at a presser in Mexico set to announce their exhibition. Ortiz reportedly attended that same press conference.
While Floyd Mayweather Jr has thus far refused to verify the recent slew of reports, Rick Glaser has already come out with a new unconfirmed rumor involving Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) head Al Haymon and Mayweather.
“Rumors abound, and now hearing from reliable sources that Al Haymon supposedly owes Floyd Mayweather Jr 100 Million dollars from past purses, telling Floyd he was “investing” the money for Floyd,” Glaser posted on May 15th. “And now Haymon’s been nowhere to be found since December 18, 2023!
“This could be the reason why Floyd had his financial issue in Dubai. The big question, where’s Al Haymon as I’m sure Floyd would like to know! Sounds like other Haymon fighters should be checking up on their finances, that their “Uncle Al” may have “invested” Tell me it aren’t so Uncle Al!!!“
According to Glaser, PBC chairman Al Haymon is no longer involved with his own company, having allegedly fled to an unknown destination with $100 million that was owed to Floyd Mayweather from his past fights.
The connection between Mayweather and Haymon has already been confirmed by Mayweather himself, who claimed last year to be essentially running PBC and further told PBC-affiliated fighters, “if you’re part of PBC, you’re also connected to Floyd Mayweather“. This speculatively was meant to be directed at Gervonta Davis following his departure from Mayweather Promotions.
It should be noted that none of Glaser’s claims surrounding Haymon’s alleged theft have been confirmed. Glaser’s own assertions that Haymon had not been involved with PBC since December of last year cannot be corroborated―as Haymon’s very involvement with PBC has always been covert, and it has never been clear whether he was actually in charge of PBC, despite having founded the company.
The last mention of Haymon was in the Derrick James-Errol Spence Jr lawsuit where he was mentioned as having advised Spence last year.
There have yet to be any reports of Haymon being directly involved with PBC as of this year, despite the partnership set in place between the promotion and Amazon Prime that kicked off on March 30th. Further rumors of PBC being financially insolvent have not yet been proven, but could be linked to Haymon’s alleged departure from the company.
While speculation on Al Haymon, who has notoriously always been absent from public events, might mount over the next couple of weeks, it is Floyd Mayweather Jr that will have some explaining to do given the rumors of him refusing to show up for a press-conference with Victor Ortiz―which can bring with it legal repercussions, and alleged attempts to sabotage the Davis-Martin fight by misleading fans on Instagram.
