Floyd Mayweather made a rare appearance in the boxing world through an interview on Fight Hype’s YouTube channel. While discussing various topics, his comments concerning his role within Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) stood out prominently.
Since its establishment in 2015, Floyd Mayweather has been associated with PBC due to his connection with its founder, Al Haymon. Despite officially retiring in 2017 following his high-profile match with Conor McGregor, Mayweather’s affiliation with PBC has continued. Although his specific role remains undisclosed, Mayweather affirmed that his undefined position within the organization essentially places him at the top tier, second only to PBC’s owner, Al Haymon.
“I often hear fighters say, ‘I’m with PBC, I’m with Al Haymon’, but I’m not with Floyd Mayweather,” Mayweather clarified to Fight Hype.
He continued, “I want every fighter to understand this: if you’re part of PBC, you’re also connected to Floyd Mayweather, unequivocally, end of story.
“You can’t mention Al Haymon without mentioning Floyd Mayweather. We are one.“
Despite Mayweather’s assertion, the exact nature of his involvement with PBC remains uncertain. While his words imply a role akin to co-owner or president, official records do not list Mayweather as a co-founder or co-owner of the company.
Mayweather’s disclosure, in practical terms, lacks substantial impact. Without tangible evidence of his specific stake or significant position, his statement should perhaps be taken with a degree of skepticism. It’s possible that his sense of importance is merely another facet of the ego he has often displayed throughout his career. Nevertheless, there exists clear evidence of a close association between Floyd Mayweather and PBC.
In his capacity as the founder and owner of Mayweather Promotions, Mayweather has indeed collaborated with PBC, frequently allowing his fighters to participate in PBC broadcasts through platforms like Showtime or, previously, Fox. For instance, Gervonta Davis began his professional career under Mayweather Promotions and was consequently aligned with PBC, even though he has since transitioned directly from Mayweather Promotions to PBC. Mayweather’s comments suggest that Davis might still be affiliated with him, despite his change in promotional allegiance.
Mayweather’s purported role within PBC does not drastically alter the landscape for boxers under the PBC banner. Without precise details about his role, the extent of his influence remains uncertain. Nevertheless, Mayweather has dropped hints indicating his involvement in significant fights over the past year, including the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia matchup, the Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford bout on July 29th, and the upcoming clash between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo, both of whom hold “undisputed” titles.
