Background
Gennady Golovkin was one of the most standout amateur boxers of his time. As both a junior and senior, he gathered a cabinet full of accolades and trophies in a career that spanned over three-hundred and fifty fights. Just some of his highlights include him winning the (Boxing) World Cup TWICE, Silver at the Athens Olympics and Gold at the Asian Games.
After a magnificent career full of noteworthy achievements, Golovkin finally turned pro in 2005.
Accomplishments
Gennady Golovkin made his debut as a Middleweight in 2006 after signing his first pro contract with the UBP (Universum Box-Promotion) in 2005.
It didn’t take long for Golovkin to impress the boxing world; after winning his first title in 2009 (WBO Inter-Continental), he WBA interim world title in 2010 and after being promoted towards a regular champion, he became a full-fledged world champion in 2011 when he beat Lajuan Simon to gain the IBO World Middleweight belt.
In the subsequent years Golovkin found great success by retaining his world titles along with winning several others while fighting renowned opponents such as David Lemieux, Kell Brook and Daniel Jacobs along the way.
In 2017 he drew with world champion and pound-for-pound lister Sául Álvarez in a controversial match where it was claimed that Gennady Golovkin was robbed [1] of a win.
He faced Álvarez again on September 2018, but this time fell to defeat by a close-knit majority decision.
Golovkin has since then won the IBF and IBO Middleweight titles for the second time of his career in 2019 by beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko. He subsequently defended his titles against Kamil Szeremata and Ryōta Murata in 2020 and 2022 respectively.
In September of 2022, Gennady Golovkin faced Álvarez for a third time. He would eventually lose for the second time of his career (his second loss by Álvarez), by unanimous decision.
Boxing Style
Dubbed as utilizing a ‘Mexican style’ [2], a style synonymus with swarmer or pressure type of fighters who prefer to operate on the inside or at mid-range to inflict the maximum amount of damage possible, Gennady Golovkin made his name off of finishing opponents and having an unstoppable chin.
He showed he had a high grasp over the boxing fundamentals, further complementing his toughness and power with slick and effective movement of his feet, and he displayed elite-level ring IQ throughout his career.
