Accomplishments

George Kambosos Jr. proved to be one of Australia’s finest prospects when he landed in the professional circuit. He grinded his way through primarily domestic opposition – winning several titles in the process – before challenging himself against higher-ranked opponents such as Mickey Bey and Lee Selby.

After 8 years of remaining undefeated, Kambosos Jr. faced Teófimo López in his first attempt to win a world title – in this case several. Despite his pre-match status as an underdog, George Kambosos Jr. came out victorious against the American champion, suriviving a knockdown to end up as the split-decision winner. As a result, he became a unified champion with only the WBC – then held by Devin Haney – to conquer.

In June 2022, Kambosos fought Haney to become the undisputed champion of the Lightweight division. He struggled during the bout to match Haney’s well-balanced skillset and eventually lost by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the fight in favor of Haney.

He rematched with Haney later the same year in October, but he again failed to make significant progress during his bout and he ultimately lost again by unanimous decision.

George Kambosos Jr. returned in July of 2023 where he scored a majority decision win over British lightweight contender Maxi Hughes.

Boxing Style

devin haney boxing style

Primarily a pressure fighter, George Kambosos Jr. fights Orthodox and favors fighting up close and on the inside. While his speed, power and even a nice complement of technical skills makes him a threat, Kambosos has thus far not yet fully developed his defensive capabilities, neglecting sometimes to use the basic methods of keeping up his guard or using his head and body movement.

That does not mean Kambosos is not capable of defense, but he has been known to neglect a more defensiveminded approach in favor of offense. Kambosos’ ‘swarmer’ style remains lethal however, and it has made him a multi-title world champion on at least one occassion.

His greatest attributes is his resilience, his stamina and work rate. Kambosos also utilizes a heavy jab, and he is well-capable of putting more power in his shots than the average Lightweight opponent.
