While preparing for a rather insignificant bout against WBA 130-pound champion Lamont Roach Jr., Gervonta Davis has chosen to involve himself in an ill-advised social media conflict with WBA super welterweight champion Terence Crawford. Following several exchanges on social media that culminated in Davis personally attacking Crawford’s family, the WBA lightweight champion has decided to erase all his posts on Twitter/X and has further deteriorated his name in the boxing world.

The “beef” between Gervonta “Tank” Davis (30-0, 28 KO’s) and Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s) started when Davis appeared to express frustration at The Ring’s award ceremony held on Saturday, January 11th. Specifically, his gripe seemed to be with The Ring’s new owner, General Entertainment and Authority (GEA) chairman Turki Alalshikh, and those that had attended the gala.

Why didn’t they invite everyone but they invited the people they deal with?” asked Davis in a now-deleted Twitter/X post. “Get out of here! Stop eating shit.

They want to act like this guy is good for boxing when he’s not good at anything. If so, why isn’t he training people from where he’s from? This guy doesn’t know anything about boxing, and that’s who they’re turning to.”

Clearly referring to Alalshikh in his post, Gervonta Davis would continue his rant which he allegedly aimed at Matchroom chairman Eddie Hearn:

Look at that little rat thinking he came up on something.

Davis, 30, did not attend The Ring’s award ceremony despite currently being regarded by The Ring as the 8th best pound-for-pound (P4P) fighter in the world. The likely reason for his absence would stem from Davis’ criticisms towards The Ring owner Turki Alalshikh with the WBA lightweight (135 lbs) champion having previously expressed he was angry at the Saudi official and would require at least two Ferrari vehicles to be interested in engaging in talks for a potential fight against Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KO’s). Prior to this rant, Eddie Hearn had been reportedly attempting to arrange a fight between Davis and Haney through Alalshikh.

Sensing Davis’ frustration at not being invited, Terence Crawford would proceed to poke fun at the WBA lightweight champion’s anger at not being invited to The Ring gala:

I see somebody mad they wasn’t invited to [The Ring] gala.Crawford would go on to post on social media which earned him a response from Davis in turn:

And I still make more than you…” Davis stated. “Y’all think he chasing greatness. He’s not that’s what he have to do to make decent money.

It did not end there, however, as the two would soon be involved in a venomous back-and-forth:

First thing a dumb rich person say to another rich person is I got more money than you!Crawford posted. “I bet you I own more investments than you and I don’t owe a dollar in taxes. you can’t buy nothing I can’t buy that I want sir and [that’s] a fact. Let’s see [whose] money [lasts] the longest smart guy.

The two continued debating, with Terence Crawford referencing a post from ESPN contributor Mike Coppinger who claimed Crawford had made more than Gervonta Davis over the past couple of fights while the two continued their social media argument about investments and profit. It wasn’t until Davis’ now-deleted post that he apparently realized that he had gone too far after directly insulting Crawford’s family:

And he got like 8 kids and his wife like 380 lbs… yeah buddy gotta work overtime.” Davis stated after trying to assert that Crawford was only interested in fighting Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KO’s) for profit rather than competitive greatness.

Davis’ post sparked a lot of backlash and eventually led to the Baltimore-born fighters scrubbing every Twitter/X post he’s made since being on the platform.

While the conflict between two is unlikely to spill into an actual contest, given Davis is three weight classes below Crawford’s current and has not seemed eager to challenge even the best in his own division, there is clearly bad blood between the two that will likely last for some time to come.

Gervonta Davis is currently set to face WBA super featherweight (130 lbs) champion Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-1, 10 KO’s) on March 1st in a match unlikely to help further Davis’ standing in the sport given the other 135-pound champions he could seek to unify with.
