The aftermath of the lightweight (135 lbs) title bout between WBA champion Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO’s) and Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-2, 10 KO’s) has come paired with multiple controversies after their fight ended in a majority decision (MD) draw.
Following his draw against Roach, Davis would controversially remark during the post-match broadcast that the knockdown he had suffered in the 9th round of the fight had been due to hair gel slipping into his eyes and obscuring his view.
“I just got my hair done two days ago and she [Davis’ hairdresser] put grease in my [hair],” Davis revealed in his post-fight interview.
“You know, [it’s like] when you’re sweating and stuff like that, and the grease [came] onto my face and it burned my eyes.“
Davis’ statements would also immediately be met by boos from the crowd, to which Davis would audibly react to in confusion.
According to Gervonta Davis, the braiding of his hair came paired with the use of some chemical that would eventually spill into his eyes due to the sweat his hair accumulated. While the possibility of this occurring is not implausible, as Amanda Serrano herself was forced to call of a bout due to an instance where a chemical slipped into her eyes days ― which forced her to call of an impending fight she was set to participate in the next day, Davis’ eyes did not suffer from the same condition as Serrano who was unable to compete following her incident.
In comparison to Serrano’s case, Gervonta Davis outwardly showed no signs of having any issues with his vision both during and after the fight, indicating that his claims were highly exaggerated. This is further supported by the fact that it was up to Davis himself to maintain his hair after having them braided.
Following the fight, the same hairdresser mentioned by Gervonta Davis would come out to debunk the fighters’ claims as she would subsequently reveal on her social media there the alleged hair grease had been applied earlier than Davis had initially stated as she was braiding his hair.
“I did his hair Wednesday, it’s Saturday,” The hairdresser, going under the moniker of @leebthebrand, stated in a now-deleted post on Instagram following the March 1st bout.
“He did press, gym and weigh-in. That’s not an excuse. How much grease did I use, damn!“
The post was accompanied by several pictures that showed the hairdresser’s work on Davis, and further displayed the use of a product, “Pure O Neatbraid Conditioning Shining Gel” that notably advertises it does not use wax, grease or other chemicals that could have led to Davis’ claims.
Despite her initial defense, the hairdresser would later retract her earlier statements and apologize for using too much hair grease after significant social media pressure from Davis’ fans.
Aside from the controversy involving Gervonta Davis being knocked down, which was not counted by the presiding referee and would have culminated in Lamont Roach Jr. winning the match by unanimous decision if counted, a rumor has been sparked on the internet suggesting Roach’s draw against Davis would be overturned to a victory ― supposedly due to the knockdown that was counted.
In response to the rumor, Lamont Roach Jr. put out his own post where he mentioned the possibility of his draw being reversed.
“Word round the block y’all [favorite] fighter finna be 30-1 not 30-0-1,” Roach posted on his social media account. “2X x 2 Division champ.“
The rumor appears to be drawn out of thin air, however, with neither the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) ― responsible for regulating the March 1st event ― or the WBA having alluded to any sort of reversal.
