The recent arrest of WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis has put the proposed August 16th rematch with Lamont Roach under jeopardy. With Davis incapable of training for the upcoming match, PBC appears to have no choice but to reschedule the bout to a week or two ahead of schedule.

Still reeling from an arrest for assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KO’s) should have been in camp at this stage but will be unable to train given his domestic abuse case ― though the specifics on how this case can affect the upcoming bout are still unclear. Presumably,

Despite a rematch between Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. (25-1-2, 10 KO’s) having been planned for August 16, Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) will reportedly seek to move the date to late August in order to facilitate Davis’ return and allow him to properly train for the planned bout.

The first meeting between Davis and Roach saw the two battle to a majority decision (MD) draw that allowed Davis to retain his WBA lightweight (135 lbs) title. Given the controversy of the draw itself, due to a knockdown that Davis suffered but was discounted ― which could have potentially led to a win for Roach, a rematch seemed the best resolution to follow up the March 1st bout between the two American fighters.

Davis, 30, had indicated his wishes to retire next year which might become a reality if his recent assault case culminates in the fighter being imprisoned.

The Baltimore-born fighter has been one of boxing’s most controversial figures, with the recent incident just the latest in a series of controversial out-of-ring actions that has affected his reputation for roughly half a decade ― if not more.
