Background
Gilberto Ramirez fought in the amateur Cuban circuit in his youth where he apparently picked up his technical skills in boxing [1].
Ramirez turned pro in 2009.
Accomplishments
Gilberto Ramirez made his pro debut in August of 2009 and he went on to build his experience in his home land versus other local Mexican fighters. While he debuted as a Super Middleweight, Ramirez eventually moved down to Middleweight and in 2010 he faced a local competitor in Rogelio Medina to win his first title – the WBC Youth title.
After retaining his WBC Youth title for the next 4 years several times, Gilberto Ramirez again moved up a division and came up against more international competition. He soon found himself winning the WBO-NABO and NABF Super Middleweight titles in 2014, and in the next match he won the WBO International title.
In 2016, Ramirez beat German WBO world champion Arthur Abraham to earn the title for himself, smoothly winning by UD and becoming a world champion – for the first time – in the process.
Ramirez continued to defend his world title several times for the next couple of years before moving up to Light-Heavyweight. In 2020 he won his first title (NABF – North American Boxing Federation) in the division and the next year he retained his title against one of the top fighters and a rising prospect in the Light-Heavyweight division, Sullivan Barrera, with a statement win that saw Barrera get knocked down several times, and eventually stopped in the fourth round.
Ramirez’ excellent unbeaten form as a Light-Heavyweight continued on for the next two years when he beat top-ranked contenders in Yunieski Gonzalez and Dominic Boesel. On the 5th of November in 2022, he was scheduled to face WBO Light-Heavyweight world champion Dmitry Bivol. Unfortunately, Ramirez succumbed to his first career loss against Bivol, after losing by unanimous decision.
Almost a year later on October 7th in 2023, Gilberto Ramirez returned, this time at cruiserweight. He faced Joe Smith Jr., who himself had moved up to the 200 lbs division, and managed to record a successful unanimous decision win over the American fighter.
Boxing Style
Gilberto Ramirez has shown an advanced skillset in certain areas, mostly due to his reported background in the amateur Cuban circuit. As a testament to his skills, he has managed to outbox many opponents, managing to take advantage of his reach and height, and merging his footwork with his boxing ability to take out opponents without accumulating too much damage.
He has a tendency to go to the body, and has shown great proficiency at doing so, managing to knock down high-ranked fighters – like Sullivan Barrera – with his body shots or otherwise seriously hampering his opponents.
