Background
As an amateur Hector Luis Garcia reached the final of amateur continental competitions on at least three occasions. He managed to qualify for the 2016 Olympics, but was eliminated in the first round (round of 32) of the tournament.
Garcia also competed in the World Series of Boxing at least twice, and he won several national tournaments throughout his career, including the Copa Romana, and the Panamerican Sports Festival.
He finally turned professional in 2016.
Accomplishments
Hector Luis Garcia has competed as both a Featherweight and Super Featherweight. He won his first title, the WBA fedelatin, in 2018, but his first world title win came in 2022 when he beat Roger Gutierrez to earn himself the WBA Super Featherweight title. He received that opportunity after decisively beating American prospect Chris Colbert by unanimous decision in February of 2022.
Garcia has managed to retain his unbeaten status throughout his professional career, but lost for the first time of his career after facing Gervonta Davis on January 7th at lightweight in 2023. Garcia was stopped in the 9th round of his match against Davis.
Hector Garcia returned to the ring on November 25th to defend his WBA featherweight title against Lamont Roach. Garcia narrowly succumbed to a split-decision loss against Roach, resulting in the loss of his WBA title and resulting in the second defeat of his career.
Boxing Style
Hector Luis Garcia tends to use his size and power whenever applicable, and is not shy in using his Southpaw stance to his advantage against Orthodox fighters. He is best known for pressuring opponents, but has more trick up his sleeves with his ability to also fight like a counterpuncher.
Though he is not necessarily considered a high-IQ fighter, Garcia knows how to punish his opponents up close – especially with his body shots – and he is particularly known for his left hand which he often uses to load power shots with.
