Background
Hughie Fury’s senior amateur career was short, lasting only from 2011 to 2012, and he had some relative success, managing to win the local CYP Championships in 2011 and the AIBA World Youth Championships in 2012. He fought as a Heavyweight (Super-Heavyweight in the amateurs) during this period, and accumulated a total of eight wins (zero knockouts) and two losses.
He is also known as Tyson Fury’s cousin and like his cousin he has been under the boxing tutelage of his father Peter Fury.
Accomplishments
After debuting in 2013 in the Heavyweight division, Hughie Fury spent the next couple of years unbeaten while slowly building his resume against. His first legitimate challenge therefore came against Joseph Parker in 2017 against who he suffered a close majority decision loss in a bid to win Parker’s WBO world title.
In 2018, Fury seemed to be getting on the right track with a stoppage victory over British Heavyweight Sam Sexton, but upon challenging Heavyweight veteran Kubrat Pulev – in the same year – in a twelve-round titleless bout, he fell to a surprising unanimous defeat to the Bulgarian.
His next two wins in 2019 saw Fury show much of his early career form as he netted two KO/TKO victories. Later in that year, he faced Alexander Povetkin with the WBA International title on the line, but the Russian seemed too well-matched for Hughie Fury and the Brit was soundly beat by unanimous decision.
With his third loss behind him, Fury won his subsequent three fights in 2019 and 2020, managing to stop two out of the three opponents he faced in that time span.
Boxing Style
Growing up in a ‘boxing family’ and trained by his father Peter Fury – who would eventually help Tyson Fury win his first World titles – Hughie has picked up some of the trademark Fury skills such as a deceptively quick jab, good footwork fundamentals and at least a decent defense. He has also showcased his power throughout his professional career, having KO’ed more than half of his opponents in over twenty fights with his right hand.
Despite dealing with unfortunate injuries and conditions such as the skin condition that drains his fatigue, Hughie Fury has shown the resilience to be able to face top opponents without being dragged in one-sided battles.
