During a recent interview on Sky Sports, former women’s WBO Middleweight world champion Savannah Marshall confirmed that she has activated the rematch clause in order to pursue another fight with the women’s division’s undisputed Middleweight champion Claressa Shields. According to Marshall, her preferred arena would be Newcastle at St. James Park, if the rematch would go on to commence.
The two women fought each other last on October 15th at the O2 Arena in London. Claressa Shields (13-0, 2 KO’s) came out as the winner in that match-up and became undisputed at Middleweight for the second time of her career. Marshall seemed keen on avenging her loss when asked on the prospect of facing Shields again, and strongly believed in her chance to win in the potential rematch.
“From going on the last fight, I think I can outbox her.” Marshall explained.
Savannah Marshall is one of the most decorated female amateur boxers of the UK, and also competed at the 2016 Olympics where she eventually lost in the quarter-final of the competition. As a professional, she impressed with her streak of stoppage/knockout wins and dominant victories, especially when she beat former WBO Middleweight British champion Hannah Rankin (12-6, 3 KO’s) decisively by TKO.
Though Marshall had managed to beat Shields in the amateurs – handing Shields her only loss in the amateurs as a result, the professional match between the two ended differently last time around. With Marshall having been considered the favorite during their last match due to her winning form, previous amateur victory over Shields and the fight taking place in her home country, the rematch will now provide different stakes for both fighters if it commences.
