Background
Jamaine Ortiz had a total of 114 matches in the amateurs where he managed to win 100 times. Ortiz was a highly-regarded prospect, especially on the national amateur scene when he managed to win the Golden Gloves once, while also earning himself a bronze medal during this competition, and one at the US National Championships. He also performed amicably enough to be chosen for Team USA, for who he competed in international matches.
He faced a ton of prospects who would go on to become top-ranked fighters or even champions in the pro’s, including Teófimo López, Abraham Nova, Gary Antuanne Russell and Edgar Berlanga. He turned professional in 2016. [1]
Accomplishments
Jamaine Ortiz has fought as both a Super Lightweight and a Lightweight throughout his career. He won plenty of silverware by winning several low- and mid-tier titles. Though he suffered a disappointing draw in a match against Joseph Adorno – who managed to knock him down twice, Ortiz didn’t falter in being competitive as he went on a short but pivotal two-match winning streak that launched him higher up the rankings.
His most notable performance was a crucial win against veteran Jamal Herring in 2022, who he rallied against late in the match to edge out a UD victory. That same year, a match was arranged on the 29th of October against the renowned Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko. Ortiz put in a good performance in his match with Lomachenko, but after failing to break through Loma’s defense, he eventually lost by unanimous decision to the Ukrainian after he lost in nearly all of the championship rounds.
Jamaine Ortiz returned in 2023 on September 15th against Antonio Moran who he eventually defeated by unanimous decision after ten rounds.
Boxing Style
A natural Southpaw, Jamaine Ortiz is a fluid and agile fighter, known for his workrate in the ring, his strong left hand and his piston-like jab. He’s prone to fighting on the inside where he can unleash energetic combinations, espercially when he traps his opponent. He has impressive punch variety and is thus capable of landing a string of lethal combo’s in the thick of a fight. His defense is somewhat average, but he has been able to compensate with his offensive pressure in that regard. Ortiz’ style may draw comparisons to Teófimo López who he himself faced as an amateur.
