Jaron Ennis appears to be seeking a fight with Terence Crawford for an undisputed welterweight fight given both fighters now hold parts of all four world titles; with Crawford holding three 147 lbs titles (WBA, WBC and WBO) while Ennis is currently the IBF welterweight champion. While neither fighter appears to be occupied with a future fight, Ennis’ callout appears untimely given Spence, Crawford’s previous opponent, has activated his rematch clause and will be looking to fight Crawford as soon as possible in 2024.

To be clear, it is still unknown what the exact specifications of the rematch clause in the contract between Terence Crawford (40-0, 31 KO’s) and Errol Spence Jr. (28-1, 22 KO’s) were. Reports indicate that the rematch would occur in December of 2023 yet it did not occur, and with Spence’s recent revelation of an eye surgery, there are doubts as to whether the rematch will actually occur.

No verifiable source can confirm whether the rematch was contingent to a specific deadline, and neither of the fighters’ teams have been forthcoming with more information. While Crawford and his trainer did recently admit to not knowing much about the rematch itself other than that that it was activated, the full details surrounding the rematch have not been disclosed to the public.

However, despite the apparent unavailability of Terence Crawford due to his rematch obligations with Spence, Jaron “Boots” Ennis (31-0, 28 KO’s) was not daunted by this prospect and sent out a public post to re-verify his interest in fighting the unified welterweight champion.

You send it, I’ll sign it.Ennis stated to Crawford through his Twitter account.

While Ennis’ six-word social media sentence might suggest he is interested in a fight with Crawford, there is a difference between expressing interest, and acting on it. Last year, Ennis had stated Crawford was avoided him, yet his recent statement appears to directly debunk this notion judging by Ennis’ request for Crawford to send “it” so he can “sign it”; with “it” presumably meaning a bout contract.

While Ennis’ request does necessitate further inquiries as he could have opted to reach out to Crawford personally (such as through Twitter as Crawford’s profile is available for direct messages by other Twitter users), given the secrecy surrounding the conditions of Crawford’s rematch with Spence, there is an opportunity for the two to stage an undisputed welterweight in 2024.

However, Ennis’ approach towards getting this match only drives up more questions as there are multiple effective ways to reach out to a fighter; none of which have to come by way of a public Twitter post. Moreover, the timing of Ennis’ message points towards opportunism rather than genuine interest given Crawford recently publicly bumped heads with both Errol Spence Jr. and Teofimo Lopez through social media with Crawford’s briefly being spotlighted on social media as a result.

Crawford has since responded to Ennis’ request, and while he did not appear to be against the fight happening, he did not express any clear interest to fight Ennis either.

Like I said before, Jaron Ennis had two opportunities to fight me. We talking about a kid that’s still fighting in the theater. Make it make sense.Crawford responded.
