American former unified welterweight champion Jaron Ennis will be continuing his career with Matchroom after extending with the British promotion. Regarded as one of the best boxing promotions globally, Ennis fought under the Matchroom banner thrice in 2024 and 2025, and unified this year against former WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis before moving up to the super welterweight division.
Now a super welterweight (154 lbs) contender, Jaron Ennis (34-0, 30 KO’s) still holds the WBA welterweight (147 lbs) title but the belt is expected to be relinquished by the sanctioning body shortly, thereby placing the American in front of the gargantuan challenge in conquering a highly-competitive 154 lbs division.
According to Matchroom, Ennis has signed an extension to the original multi-fight deal signed in April of 2024 and will continue to see his career out at Matchroom in another lengthy multi-fight deal. Ennis has fought three bouts under Matchroom so far, with his last match against WBA welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis culminating in him becoming a unified champion for the first time of his career.
The extension comes roughly a week after it was first revealed by The Ring owner and Riyadh Season head Turki Alalshikh that Ennis was looking for several tune-up fights on the aforementioned cards rather than seeking competitive fights ― which The Ring and Riyadh Season cards build their events around.
A bout with WBC interim 154-pound champion Vergil Ortiz Jr (23-0, 21 KO’s) remains an option for Ennis in the foreseeable future but for now appears to have stalled as Ortiz is expected to fight against his own tune-up in the lead-up to their potential bout, likely spurring Ennis to likewise seek an easy fight to adapt to the new division.
As the former IBF champion at welterweight, there likely is some leverage Jaron Ennis has to face the current incumbent IBF super welterweight champion, Bakhram Murtazaliev (23-0, 17 KO’s), but no reports have yet linked him with the Russian champion.
WBA champion Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KO’s) will be facing Canelo Alvarez in September and is thus an unrealistic option, while WBC champion Sebastian Fundora (23-1-1, 15 KO’s) and recently-crowned Puerto Rican WBO champion Xander Zayas (22-0, 13 KO’s) are currently available for Ennis to test his ability against.
However, with Ortiz being mostly eyed despite his interim champion status, it is unlikely Jaron Ennis will face any of the current world champions of the division this year.
Ortiz is generally considered the best super welterweight fighter after Crawford and is currently ranked at #2 on BoxRec’s 154 lbs ranking boards after a more convincing victory over Uzbek contender Israil Madrimov.
