Background

During his career as an amateur, Jermell Charlo amassed 64 fights with just 8 losses. He was quite successful as a junior amateur, noticeably winning Bronze at AAU’s Junior Olympics in 2005. His senior career wasn’t as decorated however, but after deeming himself to have the necessary tools and experience Charlo finally turned pro in 2007.

Accomplishments

Having spent his entire career at Junior Middleweight, Jermell Charlo had a slow but steady ride to the top as he headed towards 20 wins before winning a title (WBC Continental Americas) in 2013 and the IBF-USBA title later that same year.

Building upon his first title wins, Charlo remained unbeaten. In 2016 he became a world champion when he won the WBC Junior Middleweight title which he held for two years and three title defenses before meeting an upset loss against fellow American contender Tony Harrison in 2018.

2019 was a much better year for Charlo as he easily beat Jorge Cota en route to a rematch victory over Harrison who he stopped in the eleventh round of their bout.

Jermell Charlo’s form continued, he grabbed an important win against former world champion Jeison Rosario in 2020 where he won Rosario’s WBA, IBF and vacant The Ring titles in a dominant victory that saw him knockout Rosario in the eight round .

In 2021, he faced Brian Castaño for the first defense of his new titles and the fifth for his WBC title. The match was an upset; Castaño superceded expectations and managed to brawl out a split decision draw, allowing Charlo to still keep his titles.

Following the close-knit match, a rematch was soon set for May 2022. While both fighters seemed to be at their best the day of their rematch, Charlo proved to be the better fighter when he eventually knocked out Castaño to earn the last belt remaining – the WBO Super Welterweight title – and become undisputed for the first time in his career. Even more impressive was that Charlo managed to beat Castaño in his own home country, as the rematch was held in Argentina.

Charlo returned after more than a year to face Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight where he disappointedly lost by unanimous decision in an unsuccessful attempt to become undisputed on September 30th. Charlo further lost his WBO super welterweight title to Tim Tszyu on the same night; due to a decision made by the WBO that deemed Charlo to be liable for preventing Tszyu from having a world title opportunity.

Boxing Style

jermell charlo boxing style

Primarily a power puncher, Jermell Charlo hasn’t stepped away from his brawler-type of fighting since his debut, and he’s had success with his approach despite the loss and draw he’s suffered so far. While he does have a grasp over the basics, he more or less tends to rely on his punching power – more specifically his powerful right hand – to close out his fights. Although he adopts a reckless style of fighting, Charlo’s quick reflexes, reaction time, hand speed, power and footwork has helped mitigate his defensive shortcomings.

Following his one loss and a draw, Charlo became a better defender, and more efficient offensive juggernaut, knowing when to hold back and when to pounce on his opponent, a testament to his growing ring IQ. He has also developed himself in the art of counterpunching, knowing how to use the right angles with his body or taking the right positions in order to land himself the best opportunities to counter his opponents.
