Background
Jessica Nery Plata had a fairly unnoticeable amateur career. She turned professional in 2011.
Accomplishments
Jessica Nery Plata made her professional debut on the 9th of July in 2011 as a Junior Flyweight, narrowly winning through a majority decision. She launched on an unbeaten winning run following her debut, and would go on to win the WBC Youth title in just fifth match against future Junior Flyweight world champion Ibeth Zamora Silva.
Her undefeated streak continued thereafter, and she retained her WBC Youth title several times in the process over the next couple of years. In 2015, she was convincingly beaten by her opponent, Esmeralda Moreno, in 2015 who had ended up victorious by unanimous decision, thus making Nery Plata suffer her first loss.
Plata rebounded successfully with another winning streak that lasted for two years – even participating as a Flyweight for a time until 2017, when she failed to convince the judges against fellow Mexican Kenia Enriquez who awarded the latter with a UD win.
Despite her setbacks, Jessica Nery Plata continued to improve and she eventually grabbed the opportunity for a world interim title (WBA) by beating her combatant Alondra Garcia by UD in 2019. Though she would lose her interim title at some point, she received another opportunity for a world title in 2022 and narrowly beat Argentinian world champion Yesica Bopp by split-decision to become an official world champion for the first time in her career.
On December 1st in 2022, she was scheduled to face Canadian champion Kim Clavel in her first unification bout.
Boxing Style
Primarily a pressure fighter out of the Orthodox stance, Jessica Nery Plata is a determined and tough fighter that tends to set up her jab for her right hand. She often tries to stay in the pocket or at mid-range to give her opponent no real space, and to compensate for the danger she puts herself in, she has developed good head and body movement while employing a durable high guard. She’s also shown herself to be an efficient body puncher.
