Accomplishments

John Ryder started out as a Middleweight and became known as a lethal finisher when he netted a KO ratio of 60% during the course of fifteen fights. In his sixteenth fight, in 2013, he faced future world champion Billy Joe Saunders in a unanimous decision loss for the British and Commonwealth titles.

He soon got back into title contention; in 2014 he won the WBO Inter-Continental title and in 2015 he challenged for the British title again where he once more suffered a loss, this time by stoppage.

Ryder recovered from his bout and won the WBA International title a mere year later in 2016. He had a minor setback when he lost his title in another UD defeat later that year. He thereafter won the IBF International title, and then challenged for the British title a third time against  Rocky Fielding. Fielding proved to be the better man in this contest when he won by split-decision.

John Ryder seemed unfazed by the loss and he wont on a four-win KO/TKO streak before facing countryman Callum Smith for his WBA world title and The Ring lineal title. Smith ended up winning by unanimous decision in a fight where he clearly dominated during the majority of the fight.

Following two more wins in 2020 and 2021, Ryder faced Daniel Jacobs in February of 2022 and narrowly managed to win against the American vet by split-decision. In November of 2022 he went on to face Zach Parker for the WBO interim world Super Middleweight title, Ryder won his second world interim title. As Parker quit in the fifth round due to an injury, Ryder therefore became the WBO interim world champion with a chance to face Saul Alvarez in before or in the summer of 2023.

A match was eventually arranged between Ryder and Alvarez on May 6th. John Ryder lost the bout by unanimous decision, but notably put up a stupendous effort during the 12 rounds to prevent Saul Alvarez from claiming a victory by knockout or stoppage.
