Background
Though Jose Zepeda’s amateur career is scarcely known, the fighter became a professional in 2009.
Accomplishments
Jose Zepeda initially experimented in the Lightweight division where he proved to be a capable fighter that got himself within the top rankings of the division. Eventually – after twenty-thee fights and six years – Zepeda received his first world title opportunity against Terry Flanagan in 2015, but was unfortunately stopped very early in just the second round of his bout.
Zepeda recovered however, traversing regularly between the Lightweight and Super Lightweight division where he won several mid-tier titles. In 2019, after three years on a seven-match winning streak, he received the chance to fight for a world title again against Jose Ramirez. Jose Zepeda lost by unanimous decision, but continued on with his career by retaining his third unbeaten run so far.
His fight against Ivan Baranchyk in October of 2020 has been considered one of the best fights of the year after both fighters were knocked down four times.
On November 26 in 2022, Zepeda fought Regis Prograis for the then-vacant WBC Junior Welterweight/Super Lightweight world title but suffered an eleventh round knockout to end the fight, and the prospect of him winning his first world title.
Boxing Style
A natural southpaw, Jose Zepeda has employed a number of different styles. It is known that he tends to favor a more reserved style however, seemingly one where he can counterattack or outbox his opponent. Because of his lack of a notable amateur background, this makes him a tricky fighter as he has shown the ability to improve rapidly, even after losing.
Zepeda is also very resilient, having amazingly enough managed to suffer four knockdowns and still be able to stop his opponent Ivan Baranchyk. He can fight well on the outside, but can also pressure his fighters well, making Zepeda one of the more versatile fighters in the divisions he fought in.
