Background

An Olympic bronze medalist, Joshua Buatsi carved out a successful amateur career for himself before turning professional in 2017. He won the English National Championships on two occasions, and did well at the European Championships where he managed to reach third place in the competition. During his participation in the 2016 Olympics, Buatsi impressively managed to score a knockout and a technical knockout prior to losing in the semi-finals of the tournament.

He also faced several top-rated future professionals during his amateur career which includes the likes of Zach Parker, Craig Richards (who he would go on to beat as a professional), Lyndon Arthur and Jack Massey, and managed to beat all of the aforementioned fighters.

Accomplishments

A natural Light-Heavyweight, Joshua Buatsi stormed onto the scene with impressive wins through either stoppages or knockouts. Though he won a mid-tier title (WBA International) in just his seventh fight – a year after his debut, Buatsi solidified himself as one of Britain’s best prospects by beating fellow prospect Liam Conroy in 2018 for the British title.

In 2021, he faced his most highest-ranked opponent in Ricards Bolotniks and proved his talent by stopping the Latvian boxer in the eleventh round. His next challenge was in 2022 where he faced former world title challenger Craig Richards – whom he had faced earlier in the amateurs. The match went in Buatsi’s favor, culminating in a unanimous decision win.

Joshua continued his unbeaten run with a UD victory in May of 2023 over Polish contender Pawel Stepien.

Buatsi went on to become the  WBA mandatory challenger in the light-heavyweight division  after defeating British rival Dan Azeez on February 3rd in 2024 by unanimous decision.

Boxing Style

joshua buatsi boxing style

Joshua Buatsi is one of the most well-rounded boxers in his division. This is further complimented with the above-average power he possesses, and a steady progression of his boxing fundamentals which has seen him turn his jab into a potent weapon, and excel at times both offensively and defensively.

He is difficult to box in as a fighter; he can fight on both the front and back foot and though he has shown to be able to brawl, he also doesn’t shy away from using his advanced boxing skills to net a clean and relatively undamaged victory.
