Background
Juan Francisco Estrada turned professional in 2008 after an amateur career where he purportedly amassed a record of 100-15 during that time.
Accomplishments
Without an amateur background, Juan Francisco Estrada has managed to mark his name in the history books when it comes to the lower divisions with his performances at Junior Flyweight, Flyweight and Super Flyweight/Junior Bantamweight. Estrada remained undefeated since his debut until his nineteenth fight in May of 2011 where he lost to opponent Juan Carlos Sanchez by unanimous decision.
Following his loss, Estrada worked his way up the ladder once more. After several successful fights in the rest of 2011 and 2012, Estrada finally received his first world title opportunity against Roman Gonzalez when a match between the two was scheduled for November of 2012 at Junior Flyweight.
Juan Francisco Estrade suffered his second career loss against Gonzalez in their first fight, again losing soundly by unanimous decision. The Mexican seemed barely fazed by his second loss as he moved up a division (to Flyweight) to immediately challenge Brian Viloria for his WBA and WBO world Flyweight titles. Estrada turned out to be victorious in his second world title opportunity when he narrowly managed to win against Vitoria by a split-decision in 2013.
Now a two-title world champion, Juan Francisco Estrade defended his title five times over the course of the next two years, but he eventually vacated the WBA title in 2016 due to injury. The WBO title was also vacated not long after when Estrada decided to move up to Junior Bantamweight/Super Flyweight.
In 2018, Estrada met with Srisaket Sor Rungvisai at Super Flyweight for his WBC world title and The Ring’s lineal vacant title. Against Sor Rungvisai, Estrada suffered his third career loss when he was defeated by a close majority decision. This loss was avenged around a year after – and two matches later – when Estrada revenged his loss with a unanimous decision win over Rungvisai, which also made him the Super Flyweight division’s WBC and The Ring champion.
After two more bouts where he defended both his titles in 2019 and 2020, Juan Francisco Estrada rematched then-WBA world champion Roman Gonzalez in March of 2021. Estrada succeeded in revenging his 2012 loss to Gonzalez through a tightly-contested split decision where Estrada also unified the newly-won WBA title with his existing WBC title by winning against Gonzalez. Not long after, Estrada was designated with the franchise champion status of the WBC which gave him the opportunity to fight for the WBC world title sometime in the future at his own leisure. As a result of his new status, the WBC Super Flyweight title was vacated.
After a UD win against Argi Cortes in September of 2022. This decision came at a grave cost however as the WBA had ordered Estrada to face Joshua Franco in order to fulfill his mandatory obligations as a world champion of their organization. As a result, Juan Francisco Estrada was stripped of his WBA world title.
Estrada’s next bout saw him face Roman Gonzalez for the third time on the 3rd of December in 2022 with his The Ring title on the line, and the WBC vacant title made available for the fight. Though the fight was close, Estrada narrowly won from Gonzlez by majority decision, improving his record against Gonzalez to 2-1.
Boxing Style
Though he entered the professional ranks of boxing without a competitive amateur background, Juan Francisco Estrada has developed himself into a skilled boxer that is capable of fighting both aggressively and defensively. As a result, he can fight on both the front and back foot and he has additionally grown in boxing fundamentals such as footwork to accompany his boxing ability.
Estrada has further shown his power and toughness on many occasions, having managed to win againt Carlos Cuadras after being knocked down as atleast one testament to his resilience as a fighter.
