Background

Julian Williams had over 80 fights in the amateurs but seemed to be slightly overshadowed by prospects he faced such as Errol Spence Jr. He made his professional debut in 2010.

Accomplishments

Following his debut at 154 lbs in 2010, Julian Williams sailed through his first couple of opponents until his seventh match when he incurred a draw against fellow American Francisco Santana. He continued his winning form after the setback but narrowly missed out on winning a title against Hugo Centeno Jr. in 2013 after their fight was ruled a no-contest after an accidental clash of heads. Otherwise he had no real obstacles that affected his raking or his reputation.

In 2016, Williams faced IBF world champion Jermall Charlo in his first world title challenge. Charlo was the better man throughout most of the round and he eventually knocked Julian Williams out in the fifth round of their bout.

Undeterred by the loss, Julian Willims made a speedy return in 2017 where he still proved himself to be a worthwhile contender with several dominating wins including a statement win over former world champion Ishe Smith. He faced Jarrett Hurd in 2019 for his three world titles, producing a fine display of boxing ability and talent during the match which he eventually won by UD.

He held his first world title defense in 2020 against Jeison Rosario, but the match proved to be a mismatch in this case as Julian Williams fell to an upset stoppage defeat to the Dominican who would subsequently lose to Jermell Charlo in September of that year.

In his next match, Julian Williams shockingly lost again by split-decision to the relatively unknown Vladimir Hernandez. He has since then sought to make a resurgence at 160 lbs after defeating his Middleweight opponent easily by UD in 2022.

Boxing Style

julian williams boxing style

Julian Williams is all-around adept in most areas as a fighter while not excelling in any particular area. His style is similar to his atributes; he can adopt different styles such as being able to pressure opponents but also counterattack, and although he does tend to rely mostly on a patient counterpunch style of boxing, he can just as easily turn up the pace.

WIlliams distinguishes himself with his ring IQ, using it in combination with his attributes to outsmarten and outbox his opponent if possible. He’s equipped with a good jab and excellent footwork that allows him to control the ring and the pace of a fight.
