Background

As a junior competitor, Okolie performed well in national tournaments, winning the U18 National Championships in 2014, and also managing to win Bronze in the 2015 Tammer Tournament.

While not winning any competition of note as a senior amateur, he managed to qualify for the Rio Olympics in 2016 through the Olympic European qualification tournament, but lost in the preliminaries of the Olympics to eventual semi-finalist Erislandy Savon who had beaten him in another tournament just two months prior.

Accomplishments

On January 18, 2017, Okolie turned a professional under the Matchroom Sports promotion, debuting not long after in March where he stopped his opponent in the first round.

He went on to have a busy couple of years where he won several titles, eventually earning a shot at a world title against Krzysztof Głowacki for the vacant WBO World Cruiserweight belt in 2021.

Performing to the best of his ability against a tough opponent, Okolie managed to beat Glowacki by KO in the sixth round.

He further supplemented his record with a KO win in the third round against Montenegrin prospect Dilan Prašović in 2021. In 2022 he retained his title once more against Michał Cieślak with a unanimous decision win.

He then went on to successfully defend his title again on March 25 in 2023 when he defeated David Light by unanimous decision. Roughly two months later, Lawrence Okolie faced former gym-mate Chris Billam-Smith in an all-British clash to defend his title.

Putting up his worst performance yet against the fellow Brit, Lawrence Okolie lost by majority decision and suffered the first professional loss of his career.

Boxing Style

Known for his long reach and power since the amateurs, Okolie later developed his footwork and jab to devastating effect, as evident by his large streak of KO victories and perforamnces in the ring.

In his step-up fight against Glowacki, Okolie showed sheer determination and a development of his natural talents to grind out a stoppage win. Against Michał Cieślak he would face the reality of dirty boxing and he showed the ability to recover from such tactics, and retaliate the same .
