Accomplishments

Liam Smith made his name at 154 lbs since his professional debut in 2008. While building his presence as an unbeatable British prospect, Smith earned recognition by winning the Commonwealth and British titles in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

In 2015 – while still undefeated, Smith fought for his first world title (WBO) at Junior Middleweight against American title holder John Thompson, and managed to stop Thompson in the seventh round of their contest. Smith continued defending his world title two more times in 2015 and 2016 before facing Saul Alvarez in September of 2016 for the third defence of his title.

Alvarez recorded a knockout victory over Smith in their world title bout, but Smith continued to remain at the fringes of the top rankings. Despite two disappointing unanimous decision losses against Jaime Munguia (in 2018) and Magomed Kurbanov (in 2021), Smith  recorded some impressive wins against worthy competition in Liam Williams, Roberto Garcia and Jessie Vargas as he continued working for a shot at a world title.

Since 2022, Liam Smith has moved up to 160 lbs where he has proven to be no worse than at 154 lbs with a stoppage victory over his opponent, Hassan Mwakinyo.

In January of 2023, he faced former WBA (Regular) world champion Chris Eubank Jr. in a match that saw him move defeat Eubank by a destructive stoppage victory in the fourth round.

Smith again faced Eubank Jr. on September 2nd later that year, but succumbed to a stoppage loss himself in the 10th round.

Boxing Style

liam smith boxing style

Liam Smith looks to methodically grab a victory through effort, pressure and skill. While he does tend to like his fights on the inside, Smith doesn’t recklessly dive in – as pressure fighters are likely to do – but makes ample use of his jab to estimate the range or set up his attacks.

Most of Smith’s stoppage or knockout wins are a result of this come-forward style. To complement the way he fights, Smith has developed his defensive fundamentals accordingly but sometimes tends to lack in the movement of his feet, head and body when a fight reaches its latter stages. As a result, Smith tends to fight with a  high guard that has proven difficult to break through.

Despite not being shy of pressuring opponents, Smith has shown some susceptibility at being on the wrong end of that style himself, as evident in his world championship fight with Saul Avlarez.
